And now for some Robert E. Howard fan art...
Image
Conan and the Dragon
Deep in the equatorial jungles of the Black Kingdoms, Conan the Cimmerian is having an unpleasant run-in with a native dragon. Can his scimitar save him from the monster's maw, or will he have to rely on his cunning or flight?

Although Conan does actually encountered a similar dragon-like creature in the Robert E. Howard story Red Nails, this is not meant to be an illustration of that scene. Instead I got the idea for the composition from a movie still taken from the original King Kong movie (it's the one with a carnivorous Brontosaurus about to eat a sailor who's clinging to a tree).

Pharaoh's Assassin
There's actually a little back-story to the male character in the foreground. He's a Hebrew warrior whose tribe got enslaved by Egyptian raiders, but his combat skills so impressed the Egyptians that their Pharaoh employed him as her top-ranking assassin. At least "assassin" is the word that came first to my mind when labeling his new occupation. In practice he's more like a special-ops commando whose best asset is brute strength rather than stealth or manipulation. Anyway, our Hebrew protagonist and the Pharaoh develop the hots for each other over time, but not only is this relationship controversial among the Egyptians, but the hero eventually wants to buy his whole tribe's freedom.

I wanted this artwork to look like something you'd find on a book cover or movie poster, but I am not completely satisfied with the composition (I think too much of the Pharaoh's face in the background is obscured).

Presidential Vacation
Ever wonder how the President of the United States spends his time off? Goodness knows what kind of Pentagon technology he has access to...

Say what you will about President Obama or the sport of hunting, but this wasn't meant to make any kind of political point either way. I just thought it would be cool (and provocative) to have him hunting a T. Rex. Originally I was going to use Theodore Roosevelt instead, as he's better known for his hunting career, but then I felt a more contemporary President would get more of a rise out of people.

Hey everyone! Loving all the artwork on this thread. I've been hitting sensory overload recently, and when that happens I tend to completely withdraw and focus on art and music (usually music, so it's strange that I this time around I'm drawing).

I've only been realizing all my AS symptoms recently, which has coincided with this recent need to do some fantasy world building and concepting for a potential graphic novel (something I haven't even considered since high school).

So out of the blue, I sat down with a ball point pen, and concepted this for a fantasy world. It was hours after that I realized this concept wasn't random, but perfectly echoed how I'm feeling as of late and I guess acted as an outlet.

Image

I'm always embarrassed to talk about my concepts, but if I can't do it here, where can I? So here it goes - She/he is a humanoid race in some fantasy universe yet to be conceived. They are the rulers and overseers of a vast empire made up of many different races.

They do not have "faces" as people understand them, and do not communicate verbally. Through some kind of fantasy magic they evolved to communicate telepathically. When their race began to mingle with other races, it was terrifying for them and they were left unprepared for their illogical and uncontrollable emotions and thoughts. Over time, they found it easier to conquer these races and form a unified empire, where they set the tone and can live on their terms.

They wear elaborate masks to give the illusion of a face both for their benefit and the benefit of the other races. Over time, their full body coverings and masks have become more elaborate, more elegant, and more refined. While the masks themselves do not become more human the more decorated they are, they do become more mysterious and consequently these beings are considered ethereal and divine by many.

Any Clevelanders out here? I made these, the WJ(K)W-TV logo that was used in some form or another from 1977-94. Such a classic TV logo, even though I'm from Seattle. :D

Amendment to my above post: I redid the logos slightly; the proportions were a bit off in the first one above. This should be more closer to what they really used then.

Damsel to the Rescue
In a valiant effort to save the man she loves from a brutal execution, an African jungle huntress takes on a Tyrannosaurus rex with her seme blade.

I got the idea for this picture after looking at some pulpy adventure art that featured white male heroes rescuing damsels in distress (also white) from sacrificial rituals in exotic lands. I thought to myself, "what if it was a native black woman rescuing the white male lead instead?" As much as the jungle adventure genre appeals to me, it's even cooler when you get to subvert the old bothersome tropes.

Image
Fishing for Snakes
Deep in the prehistoric jungle, a black huntress armed with a seme dagger wrestles with a swamp-viper. It's not the biggest snake I can imagine for this setting, but then something on the scale of Titanoboa might be overkill for one lady.

That is supposed to be a Pteranodon soaring in the background over the woman's head.

I absolutely adore your values and linework here! It's a very gorgeous drawing. :)

I couldn't fall asleep earlier, so I did this in about twenty minutes. Apparently I turn into a complete work horse when I'm tired.

Edit: haha I resized it wrong.

I don't know if you guys will consider this art. I'd like to think it is. In January I started making pens and I just been full-blown OCD with it. Pretty much all I do these days is think pens and make them. I have so many ideas but I'm still developing skills. It's frustrating sometimes. But I just have to keep reminding myself that I've only been doing this a couple of months. The skills will come with time. Anyway, I just wanted to show you guys a couple pens. Hope you like. Seems that the images are resized when I upload the proportions are a little bit off, but you get the idea.

[Mod. edit: image distortion corrected. Please try to post images no larger than 800x600 to avoid this happening.
Also - you... made these?! Wow - that's truly impressive; they are beautiful objects. 8O ]
