The problem with lists of the most extreme or whatnot bands is that generally speaking, the more extreme something is, the less people no about it, so these types of lists rarely have any significant result as it's just the most extreme of the non-extreme or whatnot. So, I want to do an experiment: I'm going to cut to the chase and just ask people what's the least popular (as in unknown, not hated) band they can think of, and figure out what the most popular least popular musician is. Once I have a statistically significant most popular least popular musician, the judgment can be made!

Thanks to my brother's interest in such things I know a little more about obscure bands or their music than I really want to know. :) One of them was a band called The Residents. Their music was... well, "weird" would be too weak of a word. "Bizarre"... nope, still too weak. "WTH did I just listen to?!" ... getting warmer. Seriously, I don't think most people would even call it music, and it was hard not to think this band wasn't on LSD or something. But as I read on TV Tropes, people high on drugs have trouble just opening a door, let alone create music and other things, so maybe they weren't, at least at that time. My brother loved my reactions to the songs, I can't say I really hated them, a lot of music I like is actually pretty weird, like stuff by The Beatles or Queen although they're not obscure, but I wasn't exactly shy about telling him how I felt about it, if adjectives weren't failing me at the time. Go figure.

We could talk about musicians that aren't necessarily unknown but aren't exactly mainstream, either. For example, Sigur Ros and Sufjan Stevens. :D

Back in the day some of the more obscure musicians and bands I listened to were:

Half Japanese
Suicide
GG Allin
Sic F*cks
Mission of Burma
A Testament of Youth (ATOY)
Future Fuzz
James White & the Blacks
Lydia Lunch
No New York (the album)

Ummm, what are you talking about? OK, Sigur Ros *can* be that way but not always. Same with Sufjan Stevens. Definitely NOT Age of Adz, though. Have you heard that album???

Walter Carlos?

Okay, okay. That was a trick answer. Walter was quite famous before (and slightly after) he became Wendy Carlos. As either gender, she was a pioneer in computerized music and specialized with the Moog synthesizer. Her work included the very popular Switch on Bach albums as well as movie soundtracks including the musical score for The Shining.

Haha, it was a joke, given my profile picture. Are there any Sigur Ros tracks that are hardcore? They all sound soft and relaxing to me.

Sockface.

I know because it's my band and almost nobody listens to it, and I know that because in three years or so I haven't made enough royalties to buy for example a cheap nail polish at a drugstore...

Wait, that wasn't what you were asking for, was it?

Probably the most obscure and extreme musician I know would be myself LOL

I would play the most extreme-minimalist music ever (because I can't play music!)

And I would be obscure because I have no ability in music! LOL

That's funny because most of my friends at TC (talk classical forums) are huge on Kapustin and Sorabji. If you guys haven't a clue what Sorabji is like here is an example:

i actually prefer obscure not well known bands because that means their shows have smaller audiences. i can't do big crowds because of my social anxiety.

currently the most obscure bands i listen to would be:

iceage (or pretty much any band on the posh isolation label)
coachwhips
obn iii's
ty segall (he's big in the west coast but not a lot of people care about him here)
fuzz
ex-cult
the spaceshits
pink and brown
thee oh sees (they're big in the west coast, but not here)
