Calling all Goths and Darksiders
Wish I did.
Actually I did teach myself to play "Love Me Tender" on a keyboard from a book once. Maybe I can build on that to become a virtuoso. Lol!
Im a party disc jockey, and volunter as an unpaid host of a public access radio show. So I am a music lover, and am used to dealing with crowds. In fact Im expected to emcee at weddings: lets welcome to the dance floor for their first dance as husband and wife- mr and mrs Joe blow!"
It's a lot like acting, being on stage or in front of a crowd. I'm terrified of the people so I don't look at them or look at their shoes maybe their clothes, but never their faces. It's better for me to look at stuff on stage or focus out at the back of the club.
I've DJ'ed a few gigs in my time.. used to have an 80s night in Athens, and then a gothic/deathrock night in Atlanta. It was actually pretty stressful at times with always being under pressure to get the next song queued up and the beats matched. Then you had people interrupt to make requests, and so on. So in a sense dj'ing at live events was worse than just playing in a band in front of people.

Camile, thanks for bringing deathrock to my attention. I've never heard that term before, and looks like wikipedia article just pointed me towards a bunch of bands to check out.
I like birthday party quite a lot, and rudimentary peni...this should be a nice little adventure.
:D
In the 90s, I was super into the dark side of drone, like Jessamine from ohio/seattle...their album "long arm of coincidence" rips my guts out and makes me cry buckets, even after a couple thousand listens..

Fortunatley Im not expected to beat-match In the kind of deejaying I have to do. That takes away alot of stree. I just play songs. Although years ago we used cassette tapes alot- and cueing songs on tape through head phones is similarly stressful to beatmatchng vinyls.
I got this image of a grandpa simpson vampire
Maybe I'm a goof, but this made me laugh out loud.
Anyway, I was into the goth look in high school. I still wear my combats, but the rest of my clothes are packed away in the basement. The music will always be something to me, though. It was my art teacher who turned me on to "real" goth music - Dead Can Dance, The Cure, Siouxsie and the Banshees. In fact, I'm listening to SATB right now!

I love old school Goth rock (Bauhaus, Souxsie etc.), Gothic horror literature, I like the dark aesthetic allot and My Art always has the odd macabre twist to it. I'm getting custom fit Vampire fangs soon to complete my look (Not necessarily a Goth thing, I just thought it was cool)
So cutting a long story short: I consider myself goth and am active in the subculture, although mainly interacting with older goths and avoiding venues orientated at the younger self-proclaimed goths. Call me an old school goth with a rather negative view on younger (teenage) goths.
I'm 16 and I love the Older music and Look, I also have a decent understanding of the subculture's history and origins. Don't judge a set of people right of the bat (XD bat ... get it). Not all of us young Goths listen exclusively to new stuff and Worship industrial music.
My dark preoccupations began as a child. I intended to dye my fair hair black as soon as I was old enough and wear velvet; in the 70's before there was a Goth scene. I would parade around in my magician cape and hat which I had made myself or run around wearing my vampire teeth. I loved monsters and considered humans bad. I was fascinated as a child by military bands, machine noises and Kraftwerk which was to lead to an interest in Industrial music as an adult. I am in my 30's and I am still heavily into the Gothic subculture(although I still find being part of a subculture socially challenging). I have no intentions of growing up.
My psychologist told me that a lot of her Aspie clients wear mainly black. Secondly several Goths in my local scene have told me they have Aspergers Syndrome and thought I had it too. Do you think 'Gothickness" could be genetic and/or Aspie trait?
Grrrr!

I like some of the music, but the lifestyle seems a little silly, I think its the puffy shirts, and the capes, but if
people want to walk around pretending their Lestat who am I to judge them, some days I need a good laugh.
Some goths just wear T shirts and jeans, or maybe a leather jacket and studded bracelets, Just saying there's more than one flavour of liqourice
i was considered 'goth' by most people in high school due to only wearing black and having long hair. but the goth kids saw me as more of a metalhead. ive always been fascinated with death and scary stuff. and i draw pretty dark stuff too. nowadays i dont wear as much black but its still my favorite color. im not sure ive ever considered myself goth but i can definitely get along with that scene.

I recently just joined the forum just so I could reply to this thread. YES! I am a darksider. Have been since childhood. I love anything dark, spooky, weird and odd. I'm not just into the traditional goth stuff, either as I find dark, sexual, meaningful things in other places that most would consider 'non goth'. I love monsters, the supernatural, paganism, the occult... @.@ The list goes on. >w<

I have considered myself a metalhead for quite some time, and of course a lot of metal is rather dark which I enjoy. I do like some goth rock though, also like post punk like stuff simular to Joy Division and then there is the death rock...lol I am much better at metal categorizations as that is mostly what I listen to that and pychedelic rock. I do like black, it is a good color and looks good on me....however I like colors too so sometimes I may be wearing no black aside from my shoes I typically only have black shoes. But I like plaid and weird vintage psychedelic patterns or whatever and throwing in some bright colors here and there. As for movies I certainly tend to prefer dark sort of themes though I do like comedy, but especially dark comedy. I have been called a goth before but I more listen to metal and psychedelic rock than goth music, though I do enjoy that as well.
I dress like this a lot of times:

Is this the same culture as Emo people? Really, I don't know. I remember about 10 years ago when I first noticed all these people skulking at night in dark clothes, all pierced out, with studded belts and accessories and chains hanging from their pants. It feels like Emos have a herd mentality but Goth are more solitary types. Is my percetion incorrect?

I went through an especially depressive period a few years ago when I started wearing all black clothing, and with my shaved head and dark gear I noticed my then Psychiatrist devoted a half page of notes detailing my attire and behavior. It seemed pretty significant to his analysis, but I abhor "dark" music, finding it depressing as all hell, and goth type music and metal give me screaming headaches, sounding more to me like ball bearings and chains in a food processor.
BTW, I wish more people posted pictures of themselves like you have. It is much easier for my brain to process and associate people posts and thinking when I have a visual of the person behind the words. Appreciate that.
The only problem I have is the whole stigma behind 'Emo' and what it means. People associate it with a really bad stereotype... but to me, it simply means embracing emotions, something upon which society seems hyper about 'getting rid of' by forcing males to be these 'emotionless rocks' and women to be 'tough', like emotions are bad. People associate emotions with depression, sadness and angsty... but people forget that emotions include love, happiness, peace, tranquil etc. And often, Emo and Goth sort of 'combined' a lot. I mean, the dark colours, the morbid hearts, the skulls, the darker music... it's like we're just long distance cousins, really. I don't honestly understand why we fight so much. Just be who you want to be and don't let anyone try to tell you otherwise. As an Aspie who is more on the weird side of life, I accept anyone be it in scene, emo, goth, tattoos, fetish, or anything else. You treat me with respect, I treat you back the same way.
