I have been attempting prose/story writing for a while as I have an aptitude for literature. I’ve been finding it a drag and haven’t really enjoyed it tbh. I always get bored with the stories I begin and I’m not good enough at producing character's to write short stories. What I like about writing is feeling words and exploring themes. I find stories flow to slowly for me to show off the best of this.

I was in a bad mood today and ended up writing a particularly edgy poem. It got me thinking about whether I might enjoy poetry more than I do prose. Should I give it a go? (P.s, don’t worry, they won’t all be dramatic and edgy.)

Go for it, and post them here if you're brave enough.

I've got a thread of poetry on here. I like making use of as many different types of rhymes as I can and on wordplay.

Definitely.
Also enter competitions with one-off publication as the prize (check copyrighting policy first, obviously)
When you get one or two published it’s great for your confidence generally.

you can't tell me to rap in my real voice, these are my real voices -
- my life is the result of numerous bad choices a topic that's best avoided
- my childhood and childish attitude was informed and distorted by numerous personalities and disorders
along wi'ða combination left over and inflicted on kinfolk from Doris' divorces

Charles Bukowski and other writers wrote both prose and poetry. No reason why you should have to choose between one or the other.

Interestingly, I started off writing short stories, stage plays, screenplays, novels and non-fiction about 5/6 years ago when I became disabled, homeless, and left the band I was in. So far, I've published 9 books including 2 audio books. Last year, I started writing poetry since I didn't become the roaring literary success I'd hoped to be. Wouldn't you know I've been having more success as a poet than a fiction writer? I wrote about 450 poems and, so far, have been published in about 50 magazines online and in print. I guess poetry is probably where I should place all my focus even though I have a nagging desire to write more screenplays.

tl;dr
Should you try poetry? Go for it.

Man....that’s excellent, Red Robin!

I’ve been published in precisely one magazine.
