The Mill on the Floss, George Eliot (1887 edition)
That book triggered a big revelation for me: I used to think that people's strong reactions towards others are motivated by either rational/intellectual judgements or emotional ones. Tom's consistent attitude towards Phillip is motivated by neither, as he gets plenty of insight into both Phillip's intellectual abilities and his kindness and benefits from them directly. It shone a light on how driven by
perception some people are - no matter what he does, in Tom's eyes Phillip will always be a "cripple", inherently inferior and repulsive - nothing can change that.
Of course, there are other factors to take into consideration here, but as obvious as this might be for many NTs it was a huge blind spot for me that helped me understand attitudes that seemed utterly stupid and absurd to me.
