I am currently reading "Lovecraft Country" by Matt Ruff (originally published in 2016), because HBO is doing a ten episode series based on it that just started very recently, with one episode every Saturday night for ten weeks (the second episode just aired).

I have always found that any series based on material from another medium can be a bit of a hit and miss thing. I have not yet watched either of the two episodes currently available for viewing, but have found the book well written and somewhat daring in conception, as it intertwines racism in the fifties with Lovecraftian horror and just a bit of sci-fi as well.

I am convinced without seeing a single episode, as yet, that much of the actual novel will need to be left out or modified, simply because I doubt this visual adaptation can follow the book exactly as written, and there are not that many examples of a faithful adaptation in my experience. I will add though that some adaptations can surpass the material they are based on, and those they are few in number as well. Nevertheless, I am eager to see what they have done with it.

My Aspie nature tends to get in the way of succinctness, so I will stop now!

The Wild Girl by Kate Forsyth. It's a historical fiction account of the Grimm brothers' story collection told through the point of view of their next-door neighbour Dortchen (who later became the wife of Wilhelm). She seems to have an awful family life in the story, but it explains that she told many stories that later were added to the Grimms collection, which is interesting. I had no idea before about the context the stories were collected in, with the different kingdoms and Napoleon, so it's interesting to learn more about that, even through a fiction book.

I'm also reading The phantom of the Opera by Gaston Leroux and really enjoying it! I like the way it darts from present tense to past and letters/reports.
