I love Joanna Newsom's material. Like some people have suspected, I, too, think she's an Aspie. Her material reminds me of what Joni Mitchell would be like if she played the harp instead of the guitar. I almost got to see Joanna at Disney Hall once! Unfortunately tickets were sold out :( My fave songs of hers are "Bridges And Balloons", "Sadie", and "The Book of Right-On" (followed by "Peach, Plum, Pear"). They seem to capture an innocence that has long been lost in contemporary music, almost like they were children's songs.

All that being said, it's beyond me how she ever got hooked up with Andy Samberg :? Andy seems like some kind of teenager (and a typical one, at that) compared to Joanna. Oh well, it's not like a romance between an innocent but intelligent female and a crudely comedic male hasn't happened before  - in fact there were two people at my high school who became boyfriend and girlfriend who remind me, respectively, of Andy and Joanna. Go figure 8O

Any other Joanna fans in the house?

Ys is one of my all-time favourite albums. Perhaps my favourite of this decade. I can understand the Joni Mitchell comparison, and I'm a fan of her too.

Yes, I've found myself in her music. She is very talented and unique. Her voice takes a while to get used to, but there's something very pure and natural about it.

Yes. Ys is one of my favourite albums, ever. Can't wait for her next album. There are a couple of Youtube videos out there of new songs performed by Joanna live, presumably which will be on a future release. I would kill to see her live myself.

I recently uploaded a bootleg onto the internet of Joanna Newsom performing new songs from her upcoming third album. It is available at Fan Made Recordings in MP3 format and at Dime A Dozen in FLAC.

There are just a few songs from the recording:

01. Introduction
02. Jack Rabbits
03. Bridges and Balloons
04. Band Introduction
05. Have One On Me
06. Ribbon Bows
07. In California
08. Easy
09. Inflammatory Writ
10. Soft As Chalk
11. Autumn
12. Emily
13. Happy 28th Birthday Joanna!
14. Peach Plum Pear
15. '81
16. The Book of Right-On
17. Colleen

in response to the first - she said she has "trouble articulating her ideas" - yep, that's a typical Aspie trait, I suppose, so I can see where you'd come up with that conclusion

in response to the second - (in the voice of Patrick from "Spongebob Squarepants") "Uhhhh....I don't get it" :P

My wife's niece [undiagnosed but high probability Aspie] sent us a CD, one of her favorites. Not QUITE my mainline - wrong generation and gender, I think - but I could see the family resemblance and get what was going on.

Joanna is a fantastic songwriter but she can be pretty hit-or-miss at times. Ys is one of the best albums of the decade but I can't stand most of the cutesy folk ditties on The Milk-Eyed Mender... either way, she has a new album coming out on the 23rd - apparently it's going to be a triple album. can't wait.

Milk Eyed Mender is a great album sir! p.s. what's wrong with "cutesy folk ditties" anyway? :P

Generally when I tell people the usual range of musicians I like, I can generalize it as "ugly old guys with eccentric voices" (Tom Waits, Bob Dylan, Leonard Cohen, Baby Gramps etc) Then I discovered Joanna Newsom so now it's just "people with eccentric voices"

I like Milk Eyed Mender a great deal, but I don't much care for Ys. It will be interesting to see what the next album brings.

I'm annoyed. I went to my local record store on release date and they said they wouldn't have it until today. I went back in today and they say check back tomorrow. Bear in mind this is not some small store, it's JB Hi Fi, who successfully muscled out the other three record stores in our area over the last few years and is now the only remaining record store within half an hour driving distance.

In case anyone is interested, NPR's All Songs Considered Live Concerts podcast has Joanna Newsom this week. Apparently this is a live concert with songs from all three albums.
