I love writing! I enjoy doing research; and, when I can, I do some fiction, too.

But UGH!! ! I HATE math!! ! I mean, I have been reading books since I was four...but I took Remedial Math in 10th Grade. I tried taking Math in Community College, and got a 67. If I see fractions one more time, I'm gonna crack!

To put it in the most manly and scientific way possible, Math is ICKY-POO.

Same here! I'm proficient at math, but reading and writing are my strongest areas and I prefer them to math.

I share your sentiments. Math has always been one of my weaker subjects. I took a pre-algebra course last semester in college and had to drop it because I was failing that class badly.

:thumleft: I am good at math - if I force myself - and in high school, one of my math teachers told me I ought to think about being an accountant. But I couldn't face it; doing math is like wading in a mental sewer, with the water over the top of my head...

Like you, I started reading early. I was reading at an adult level by the time I hit first grade. And I read whole shelves in the adult section of the library before I was old enough to get a card on my own. And I'm a writer. I love writing. Math feels like putting my mind into a straitjacket. :wall:

I've thought a lot about this, and I think my aversion to math is similar to sensory issues. What is required to force my brain to do math impacts my thinking in a negative way, something I don't think most NTs would notice, but I can't endure it.

I was hyperlexic as a child, then it just kind of grew from there ... Wrote plays and bad poetry throughout my school years, was an English major, used to work in publishing as a copyeditor, got my current job because of my grant writing skills, etc. To this day, writing things out is the best, if not the only, way I can really organize my own thoughts and get in touch with what's going on with me internally.

But, yes, I've always been horrible at math. Barely passed 7th grade algebra and to this day, I cannot do simple calculations in my head and must carry a calculator in my purse at all times. When I was diagnosed with Asperger's, I was also diagnosed with NLD, which explained why I was at polar extremes in both these cognitive areas. This came about a year and a half after I'd finished my formal schooling, but it was still kind of vindicating to know it wasn't just that I hadn't been applying myself enough with math, like some of my teachers throughout the years had insinuated.

I tried to store such numbers pure,
the task would bore me to the core,
made me fret till I was sore,
just like it did in school before,
a chore that I could stand no more,
I couldn't wait to pass the door,
discharged from that awful war!

(Take that, Dr. Seuss.)

I was just having lunch with blueroses and this thread came up. After thinking it over quite carefully, and comparing my experiences with both, I can honestly say that I have never had sex that was better than Calculus! I welcome any women that are willing to try to change my mind though ;)

Lol, that made my day!

The funny thing about Paladin's post above is that he really sounded completely serious when he said it. Definitely a great lover of math ... But, given how much he is enjoying his dessert right now, I think he might say the same thing about hot fudge, too.

I've said more than once that writing can be better than sex...

Calculus? :eew: I'm not sure the TOS would allow me to state what I'd equate that to.

So now I'm curious; do you hate writing? Does trying to write give you any sort of mental discomfort?

As I have a Learning Disability I was never any good at maths, I had no trouble with reading and spelling though.
I just go blank when I had to do maths at school I did do a numeracy course later on so I can add up and take away a little bit.

Really? You must be one of those people who actually DO "read it for the articles."

I just don't like math! To me, it felt as if somebody tied my hand behind my back, and forced me to write right-handed. It HURT!! !

On the other hand, somewhere out there is a math geek who's sweating out an all-nighter, struggling to finish his essay on Moby Dick.

:lmao: Although, to clarify, it is the creative process of writing, not reading, that is better than sex. And I do enjoy reading more than most people seem to, so depending on the article...

Exactly! I can do it, I got better marks than most people in my class. I just hate to do it. I'm right handed, but if anyone tried forcing me to write left-handed, I imagine it would be something like that. Or perhaps the time the dentist prescribed a pain medication when I had a tooth pulled that left me in just as much pain, wide awake for two days straight, and with my thoughts disrupted. That was a lot like doing math, now that I think of it.

"Math is a bad drug trip. Just say no... to math." :lmao:

Generally, no. Overall though, it depends on what I am writing. Writing an essay for an English class in response to a novel is pretty annoying to me. Writing about non fiction topics I can find either neutral or enjoyable.

I am currently working on my PhD, and doing my thesis on behavioral neuropharmacology. Generally I love to write about any science topic I find interesting. Although I have yet to start writing up my thesis, there are many times were I have to write about my project. I actually enjoy writing about my science work than I do performing the actual experiments.
