So what are your top 10 favourite death metal albums of all time??
It's tough for me decide but here are mine in no particular order:

NOCTURNUS – The Key
MORBID ANGEL – Altars of Madness
SEPULTURA – Morbid Visions (death/thrash)
DEICIDE – Deicide
AUTOPSY – Mental Funeral
DEATH – Spiritual Healing
DEATH – Symbolic (though I hate to use the same band twice)
INCANTATION – Onward To Golgotha
EUCHARIST – A Velvet Creation (melodic dm)
AT THE GATES – The Red In the Sky Is Ours (melodic dm)

Let's hear yours! :D

Nice that you mentioned Death twice, lead guitarist in my bands loves them. Chuck Schuldiner is a hell of a guitarist/lyricist.

For me, Swedish stuff

Scar Symmetry - Symmetric in Design
Dark Tranquillity - Character (album that got me into it)
Arch Enemy - Wages of Sin (awesome lead guitar)
Opeth - ANYTHING, no joke
In Mourning - Haven't gotten an album yet, but Need is my favorite demo ever
Solipsist - The Human Equation
Becoming the Archetype - I Am
In Flames - Clayman/Colony (can't choose between the two)
Shadows Fall - Of One Blood
Allegaeon - Formshifter

Been getting more into Death lately...I still think Chuck Schuldiner sucks as a vocalist, but the rest....damn iis it awesome.

His vocals are appropriate for the style of music he played (besides his later powerprog sideproject where he needed a different singer), nothing impressive but expressive enough. Funnily enough, The Sound of Perseverance features more extreme vocals on his part, as seen on the Judas Priest cover and elsewhere, but they're less death metal in style much like the sound of the whole album (which is just tech-prog or whatever fancy terms kids use these days).

It's kind of hard for me to imagine anyone else singing. Apparently there was supposed to be a tribute album with a bunch of different vocalists (with Mikael Akerfeldt rumored to be singing "Pull the Plug") but it never happened.

^ That would've been pretty awesome. I remember watching footage of Akerboy covering Murder (off Brave Murder Day; also death metal I suppose) and Candlemass's At the Gallows End. Swano still beats him in my book though.

He actually sang it on the original recording.

It did happen...here's a link:

This is actually where I've been getting the influence for my band

Yeah I'm familiar with the various tribute bands and shows and such. What I'm talking about is something a little different from that.

That particular one does sound pretty good though. Death never had a particularly great live sound.

Agreed..although if there were covers with Mikael Akerfeldt, that'd be truly amazing. The only thing Death lacked was a good vocalist, and I could at least understand him, more than I can say about many metal bands.
