I've really found mainstream music annoying over the past few days, and all my life I tend to listen to music which is rarely played on the radio. I listen to music of all eras. In my opinion music even as late as the early 2000s was much more creative than what we have now talking about sex and love.

I do this myself a lot
I think earlier music had a lot more spirit to it.

Today's music is just about superficial nonsense.

i listen ONLY to outdated musics, which have in common the fact that they are timeless works of creation, whereas much of today's stuff is disposable aural wallpaper.

The majority of the music I listen to these are from 2000 and earlier. I think the beats and lyrics were more diverse back then. These days all the lyrics are about partying and sex, and are just very shallow.

IMO that hits the nail on the head.

I listen to "Sultans of Swing" on repeat, for that very reason. Mark Knopfler had such love for that time and place in history that he made the perfect song to describe it and immortalize it. Sometimes I get very sad that I didn't live in that place and time.

I just avoid Pop music in general. I like older music, but I also like newer music, but all the newer music I like is from really obscure. independant artists, at least for the most part. Pop music sucks.

Could this be considered a form of pop music, but from the Finnish culture?

I think that music needs to not only make you feel something, but should make you want stop and listen. Bend an ear. "You hear that?" It captures the imagination. A lot of new music just doesn't do it for me.

Some older song lyrics that have stuck with me:

"We're gonna rock this town, rock it inside out!"
-Stray Cats
"Sing with me, sing for the years, sing for the laughter sing for the tears!"
-Aerosmith
"We are the Sultans, we are the Sultans of swing!"
-Dire Straits
"Rebel, Rebel, you've torn your dress! Rebel rebel your place is a mess!"
-David Bowie
"Mississippi Queen, if you know what I mean!"
-Mountain
"I hope that some-one gets my... I hope that someone gets my... message in a bottle!"
-Sting and the Police
"Pretty soon I'm singing, Doot doot doo, Lookin' out my backdoor!"
-CCR

I can't tell if it's the music itself that intrigues me or the content, because I find them both to be quite awesome.

i got some' on my finger
so i wiped it on the wall!

WHOO-EE! reelin' and rockin'-
we was reelin' and rockin' -

A lot of people like rock, are you considering that outdated music?

Starting in the 90's alternative/punk music started to become popular, part of the idea of that type of music is that it speaks out, has a message. Especially the song or band I am giving as an example. Kind of funny that you said you don't care for mainstream music, alternative/punk is now pretty mainstream when it started as part of counter culture.

Here is a song from the band Rise Against, made in 2011.

Sure, and certainly you're not alone (not even among NTs). Even if people don't bother to look back into 60s/70s (much), they'll probably still turn on something from their youth that may not be "hip" anymore. Classical music in particular circles is something one is expected to be well-acquainted with.

I completely agree with the comments posted.

I rarely listen to music that is "popular". There are rare exceptions. Like Adele or Florence and the Machine. Occasionally something might catch my interest long enough to warrant a listen or if a particular artist is recommended to me.

Most music seems to be so superficial these days.
