Something I randomly came to think about after an "incident" over on Facebook. (Nothing super serious, though.) Do you buy CDs to this day, and if so, how many do you own? Or if not, by what means do you acquire your music - vinyl, cassette, ripping from YouTube (which I eternally hate you for if you do that)?

I personally buy my music in CD format whenever possible. There's simply nothing more satisfying than shoving a new physical album into its own gap in my record shelf. And in all honesty, I like the sense of ownership that a physical copy carries with it. It's just not the same with digital purchases. I like to think I have a decently large CD collection - currently sitting at 126.

So how about you people?

I buy digital, burn it onto CDs, and then draw on them while listening to the album.
It's very satisfying.

I used to until I move to the city I live now – here there isn't any good disc shop and the delivery tax is expensive. I also used to buy Vinyl disc, I actually enjoy them more than CDs. I still have a few of both and often I listen to them, but I also subscribed to apple music so there is where I listen more of my music.

When I give my cash to someone (say, iToonz), I expect more than an invisible digital download which cost the distributer less than 3 cents to deliver to me. Yes, I buy CDs because I prefer the superior bandwidth of the music compared to the digitally compressed bandwidth of all online downloads. I want something for my money. Paying for compressed music is a fool's errand.

I have a pretty big collection, though I don't buy them on a regular basis. The last physical album I bought was actually the 3CD collector's edition of Metallica's "Hardwired... to Self-Destruct". I still need to rip it.

A lot of the music I like is either expensive on physical media, or just hard to find. :x I'm also not in a good position to order things online either.

I stopped buying CDs in 2010 and sold my entire collection. I then moved to digital only until the past year when I got into buying vinyl. Currently, I get my music through both digital downloads and vinyl and it's been fun visiting record stores and record fairs on the look out for the albums on my list. Certainly more satisfying than just getting them online.

A lot of local bands sell physical CDs at shows, including free festivals. If I like what I hear, I like to thank the band by buying a CD; they're probably making little to no money from the gig itself.

A bit off-topic here but still on that issue of quality: Some cable and/or satellite TV providers *claim* to be selling HDTV, but true HDTV comes OTA (Over-The-Air) for free. My wife and I dropped our satellite subscription some months ago in favor of an outdoor antenna and I was surprised by the noticeable difference!

Very rarely. When I was a teenager I had a huge CD collection, but I gave away over half of it. I kept my absolute favorites.

It is fun going into record stores, and I will by vinyl or CDs of my absolute favorite records, especially if they're obscure. But for the most part I've gone digital.

I don't have much of a CD collection but I do get that concept. For me I think, but I may not be the most reliable authority on my thoughts, it is less about the sense of ownership and more about the sense of it really existing.
Perhaps also is an element of why I prefer books on paper. Have tried Kindles and tablets but I feel disconnected from the book when using those.

I haven't bought any for a while, but I probably will just have been rather broke so can't really go out and buy stuff. I also have bought a lot of vinyls and even some cassette tapes, when I do buy physical copies of albums I go to independent record stores. There is a pretty cool one close to where I live, they have mostly metal and punk albums..vinyls, cds, cassettes but some other rock and such to. They also have random stuff like patches, posters, books, dvds and other band merchandise type stuff. I won tickets to a concert by entering a drawing there, so that was pretty cool it was a local band called In the Company of Serpents they're kind of doomy black metal I suppose, and a couple other bands.

I have a cd collection that fits a cd rack taller than me, and all my cds don't even fit on it...granted some are ones that were given to me that I haven't listened to much but a majority are ones I specifically bought. I imagine if I combined my vinyls and CDs in a stack that might be taller than me.

I'm trying to slowly clean, I cleaned some part of my bedroom, I want to give away somethings, maybe like CDs, DVDs. I been listening to music on Spotify, I don't really listen to other singers anymore.

Personally. I like buying cassets from albums released in the mid 2000's. That way I can ship stuff in from Ukraine and such.

Still very much a CD listener. Partly because I have so many that I still want to listen to (about 250 at a guess.) And I find new stuff by browsing in record shops for whatever looks interesting. Online shopping is no good for casual browsing. I'm not too good at looking after files, either- I've lost nearly all the mp3s I've got at one time or another.

I like CDs. They're searchable but don't have an overwhelming amount of music on them. You handle a small, physical object just like you pick up a book: "I'm going to read /this/ one now." I get thrown into a panic by open-ended, branching possibilites, so having a device with 2,500 music tracks on it really doesn't appeal to me!

I listen through earphones, mainly in bed. I rely on portable CD players, which is a real problem nowadays- they're getting rarer, and the few models still sold are often badly designed and break easily.

I still have about 100 cassette tapes, though they don't get played much. Similar problem- I can't find a tape player with noise-reduction.
