For all the writers here.

How would you explain your writing style to be,
and/or, what has other people told you your writing style comes across as?

My writing style is like that of a monkey that randomly types letters into the keyboard and by improbable coincidence always accidentally types words.

I squeeze out a couple of paragraphs and give up.

Heh, for a serious reply... :P

As far as the raw act of writing goes, my philosophy is generally content-over-style. Not that I don't value eloquence, but I like a bread-and-butter approach as to make sure my story is properly understood (or as properly understood as possible). However, I have found myself taking inspiration and adding small touches similar to those used by some of of my favorite writers, like C.S. Lewis, Arthur C. Clark, and Carl Sagan.

As for the storyline, I have some very specific ideas of what I want to do, though admittedly I have a tough time formulating them. Basically, I like a direct story with an indirect presentation; one that makes you think about how to unravel it, and makes sense when you do. A basic, direct story is rather bland, and an overly-creative, hard-to-follow artsy one is even worse (this goes for movies, too), so my aspiration is to be somewhere near the middle.

I don't write enough to get critiqued on any of my stories, but my academic writing for school has been very well received by my instructor. He says I'm a good writer with organized ideas, though sometimes I spread myself too thin.

What is your writing style?

I tend to stay objective when I have to describe something. In the "Korean Liaisons" series I'm writing, the first tome has a complicated plot, while the second tome has a simpler but dual storyline. I'm currently writing a chapter after the point where the main character, an Asperger, swore that his next "proximity" girlfriend will have more skill in math than himself (because he can reach his"remote" girlfriend only by telepathy).

While I got the first tome and Chapters 1-12 of the second tome written, the only ones that dared critique it were people who worked with Aspergers day in and day out. It's nowhere near basic, since I have the conflict between the NCTU, or Netherlands' Certified Telepaths Union (UTAH is the French acronym for the Union des Télépathes Agréés de Hollande), and the Supreme Paranormal Council of Canada (SPCC), since a Dutch high-schooler was caught cheating and first declared he used telepathy on Canadian sources. Tome 2 depicts the Asperger couple, with a NT appointed by the SPCC to lead the investigation on the Canadian side.

A lot of details. Many, many details, long, complicated sentences full of sophisticated vocabulary.

Creative pieces; poetry, fiction, and variations of both.

Are you suggesting I explain my own writing style as well. :study:

Oh. Well.
It's been said I write with the intensity of someone dying. And that it's very erratic, and grabs you. The most common word is "beautiful" but I tend to not agree. Apparently I make people think, apparently - well, apparently my works are deep, but I don't know. My own opinion is that my works tend to be over the top. I'm trying to work on that, but it's an issue because when I start writing I get so into it that it's easy to... Yes. It gets erratic and flows like a fighting river rather than a balanced current.
That's... all I can say.

In my younger years, my style was somewhere between Joyce and Bulwer-lytton, as one of my teachers put it. Only write the occasional poem these days.

That sounds great! Nothing will grip an audience like that sort of writing.

My style is actually sort of the opposite as it is clear and organized. The funny part is that my ideas often aren't!

Sounds to me like your writing style balances neatly with your ideas, in that case. :)

I would like to be able to have my writing flow like a raging river. My writing always seems too cold and logical to me. I often lack the vocabulary to express my true inner thoughts and emotions. My ideas are often scattered as well.

I would describe my writing style as versatile. I try to be adept at all the different styles that interest me.

My more poetic writing has a lyrical quality to it. I use a lot of alliteration and related techniques. I have a tendecy to rhyme unintentionally.

Some of my fiction is more straight-forward: just the facts, few literary devices. (By "facts" I mean facts in the context of the fictional story.)

My nonfiction is meant to sound very straight-forward and professional. I may meander onto some philosophical tangents, but I stay away from so-called "flowery language".

One thing that is consistent throughout my writing is use of unusual words. I have recently learned to cut down on this in certain types of song lyrics, but that is the only exception.
