Does anyone else really get a charge out of this element in music? When I say climactic eeriness I mean where it hits that tipping point where its maxed out and where it gets otherworldly, manic, almost like if it were one of the new supernatural horror thrillers your not seeing the protagonists world, your seeing and feeling the ghosts inner world. At the same time, for no known reason, it seems very emotionally healthy - like it feeds you that but in a way to where its mellow and static rather than pulling you into the way of danger in and of itself.

I could try to give some examples of people aren't sure exactly what I'm getting at but, if you do, heck, I'd like to make a thread devoted to posting whatever you can think of that hits that point (I THINK we have other darklight-lovers in here aside from myself but I'm not always sure). Elements in music that are like this, as well as their effect on me and other people like myself, just fascinate me - that and its like getting a fix, I could always use more to choose from :P.

Do you mean like when you become the music, rather than listening to it?

Oh yes! Yes.....as if I 'merge with.' I know this sensation. Often when I am in deep thought a certain element just resonanates deeply with me - same thing. And music! Images. Numbers.

I sort of know what your talking about, I find it hard to put in words, but certain climatic sequences make the hair
on my arms stand out, I know that sounds weird, its funny, but music tends to convey emotion more then words.

Yes, I get that sensation frequently. But, don't most people get that too? I find this with hard core music the most, and violins also do it for me. I don't get that from country. I sense it much more with live music.

Looks like I did an absolutely terrible job of communicating this :(.

No, none of the above. I literally mean a melodic scale, a way of managing the sounds and particularly melody, in which the eeriness of it is climactized within the music; no high-tech composer terms here, I just don't know if I can squeeze another drop out of the English language here to communicate what I really mean. The only that sucks is that a lot of the things that I'd think of as good examples, no longer available on youtube :|.

Right, I'll see what I can do.

Can we agree on what 'eeriness' is in music though? Its something that's a darker sound, a surreal sort of dark, something that has a real mysitical/supernatural kind of ring to it; kind of forboding, sometimes in more of a sourceless kind of sense. A lot of times when its being subtlely asserted its a specific use of minor scale, when its being heavily asserted its done in sort of a corrupted form of major scale. What I'm thinking of, which is about equal to the twisted and dissonant use of major scale, is kind of a blend of major and minor but it has a real gothic sort of eeriness to it; if you played video games a lot as a kid, maybe had a Sega Genesis and played Altred Beast, they had those weird little interludes and stuff - that music sort of had the same kind of thing I'm thinking of, as in it built to a climactic, a lot of the stuff I'll really find myself liking (particularly in something like drum & bass or even dubstep) starts up there and stays up there in terms of being in a constant melodic climactic.

Anyway, I just got home from work so I'll get changed and have a look around to see what I have that I can put some clips of on sendspace.

Ok, I have 3 samples about 30 seconds each in a zip file. The first is a piece of an old Source Direct tune called Computer State, the second is part of a tune I made back in 2004 called Wendigo, the third is part of an old tune by Trace called Sonar. Even at this, there's a lot of different ways this can be done, the examples I have also are decent ones but there are much more intense pieces out there in this regard.

Coil's pretty good, but different angle. I've got faith that the samples will say a lot :).

Lol, you know.... its not my aim but for all the hours of video games I played as a kid it wouldn't surprise me if that's part of what fuels my like for this sort of thing. Restricted to cheesy 8 bit sounds they had to try pretty damn hard to come up anything passable enough, pushed a lot of creative barriers I think just in that respect.
