somewhere between 1988 to 1993 There was shoegaze such Ride, slowdive, my bloody valentine, moose, swervedriver etc in the U.K and in American between 1985 to 1994 there was grunge like nirvana, Mudhoney, Alice in chain and soundgarden.

however in Late 1991 nirvana's major label debut nevermind was a successful album alongside side pearl jam's Ten and Soundgarden's bad motorfingers and hit the U.K around 1992 when British indie music was shoegazing

First, bands like sonic youth came before and are for all insensitive purposes noise rock, which is related to shoe gaze and in some ways grunge all three being post punk. In turn noise rock is linked to the no wave and art rock scenes. Genre is one of the most contentious issues, as there are a million and on ways to characterise a band. However some genres are very much a specific period.

There is no reason to have a preference. It is better to like bands for what they do rather which genres they are associated with.

Many genres and styles are put downs by citicts. For example Les Fauves (the wild beasts)

Shoegaze!?...;)

Y'all just make these up after a few years, wut?...;)

I used to listen to a lot more music in the 80s and 90s, so I listened to a little of all of it.

Both. I love grunge bands like Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and Pearl Jam, but I also like bands like Smashing Pumpkins and Dinosaur Jr. (they were listed under both).

The term shoegaze is not a slur. It is a description of those bands' performance style. They used a lot of effects on their guitars, to the point where you could barely tell they were playing guitars anymore, so they spent a lot of time staring at the ground, thus shoegazing. They were more concerned with sound than with showmanship.

I voted for shoegaze, I love all of those bands, they're a huge influence of mine. I also can't stand most grunge, especially post-grunge. Grunge started out alright but by the early '90s it was clear that this genre was simply being groomed by the record companies to fill the empty hard rock demographic that was growing so tired of hair metal. I think Kurt Cobain put it best when he described Nirvana as an arena rock band trying to play New Wave.

I tend to agree with this. Grunge was OK in the end of the 80's, but after Nirvana made it big with Nevermind, nearly all of the 'Grunge' bands signed afterwards generally sucked. Shoegaze, OTOH, is still alive and quite well, as are the similar genres of Space Rock and Dreampop.

Grunge basically was coopted by the powers that be in the music industry and in the end became just another generic commodity devoid of any of the original intent and asprations of many of the people who were in that scene. Thurston Moore of Sonic Youth made a valid point when he stated that after watching some 'Alt Rock' DJ's have a wet T-Shirt Contest at a gig Sonic Youth played that the whole 'Alt Rock' Genre entirely missed the point of what a lot of the Noise, and then current Grunge Scene were all about.

It was at the beginning, but the bands then embraced the term because there was nothing else to describe their music: it was to loud to be considered "dream pop", but too swirling to be considered just "post-punk". It was the same with the term "twee pop".

Anyway I chose shoegazing. I just like it alot more.

Shoegaze music got its name from the performers who used to play it. They had a lot of effects processors for their guitars and everything, and spent a lot of time looking at the floor to manipulate their pedals, hence shoe-gaze. That's the long and short of it. But don't take my word for it, here's wikipedia! http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shoegazing

Yes, I know it's not the most reliable form of information, but come on, it'll do for now.
