I can't. Fake drums with an annoying snare sound, cliched lyrics about the same topic (love) in every song, relience so,lely on melody and hooks, probably not written by the artist, it's infected everything, espeshally country, how many times do i have to say Taylor Swift or Carrie Underwood is not country?

Pop music is generally quite bleh, but I think the quest for authenticity is a bit overrated.

Plenty of good music out there. Considering how everything is literally within our fingertips, why not just put in a little effort to look for quality stuff on the internet or your local library?

I can't say I hate pop music, I just largely don't pay attention to it. Every once in a while a pop group or artist makes something interesting, I just don't listen to the radio waiting for that to happen - I listen to music I like in the meantime.

What do you mean by pop music?

You are talking about drum machines/beat tracks? That is mostly in the many genres of dance music. Although that is a simplification. I don't get the impression you want to know.

Interestingly New Wave was not as synthy in percussion as other genres. If you take the 80s production of Tropicalismo and off shoot of Bossa Nova and popular Brazilian music influenced by rock and folk, they not only had synthy keyboard and guitar, but also came complete with synth drum and horn section. You haven’t heard synth until you have heard synth tom toms. This was not how they did their live performances mind, but on recordings. It was because of the military dictatorship was heavily cracking down on liberal creative people, most were in exile. Even when it was over there was not much of a record industry or much money. Now full recovered thankfully.

I don't really know what music fits into what genre, but a lot of music that I believe could be termed 'pop music' is terrible.

It's repetitive, tuneless, usually with no variation in notes apart from the odd high or low note where they strain their voices, the drum beat is always intrusive and unenjoyable, they don't sing properly, the songs are always sung in a sort of American accent even if the singer is not American, the lyrics are all too often about love or relationships and are very clichéd...etc. etc. etc.

I don't mind Pop melodies, if something is catchy and memorable... can't really fault it for that.

But boring, uninspired lyrics, and a tendency to stay very conventional keeps me from listening to nearly all popular Pop music.

My favorite band, They Might Be Giants, epitomizes what I enjoy about Pop music: catchy, unpretentious, enjoyable, fun music.

I'm also starting to like synthpop, like Yellow Magic Orchestra.

I'm always trying to find, or create myself, music that is complex or unconventional yet still really catchy.

I don't like pop. I don't care for any musician that dances - especially choreographed. That's kind of the line of demarkation.

There are several acts that may come very close - Maroon 5, Madonna OLD stuff - like Shining Star, Prince(?) - not pop but very theatric and has mass appeal, a bunch of the English pop like Lisa Stansfield, ummmm.... that's about it.

Other than that - I pretty much only listen to rock. I guess its an aspie thing, that I pretty listen to ONE kind of music. I've seen a lot of aspies here who like one genre, primarily.

I can't stand country, rap, pop, r&b, hip hop, smooth contemporary jazz. I like Mozart - other than that - I can handle only so much classical. I do like big band, old school jazz, and swing! Love Sinatra.

I get really edgy and bitchy when they play country at the grocery store. And when they play that loud thumping pop crap at Old Navy. But I can crank Chris Cornell to "11" and just chill.

A lesson to you kids out there - I'm 44 and I have never wavered in my single-minded devotion to rock. And I still like it LOUD. (even with my sensitive ears) Don't worry - as you get older, your taste doesn't have to get suckier.

I totally agree, I hate modern country, although I like old country such as David Allen Coe and Merle haggard and such. Taylor Swift and Carrie Underwood are not country, their pop with an accoustic guitar. And I'm a fan of Soundgarden, Chris Cornell is (or was) a really good singer, I also like Metallica quite a bit, espshally those first 4 albums.

Johnny Cash and Willie Nelson! They will never make music like that again as long as you have to have a pretty mug to work in Nashville.

I don't like it, it makes me fell ill. I want to laugh at it, but I can't laugh at music unless it's really really unbelievably bad. I do enjoy lyrics about love though, if it's well-written. I really don't like "fake instruments" at all, I do enjoy some ambient electronic music though. Which is kind of weird, but it is what it is. I'm not a big fan of any popular music either, although I wouldn't deny it's impact.

That's hilarious!! ! I agree. I laugh at first, but the joke gets old really fast and then I want to break something. ...

I don't mind synths either. As a child of the 80's, some of my favorite bands rely heavily on the lowly synthesizer. There was this one band, The The, who was really just one guy. Their/his song "This Is the Day" is on my internal soundtrack.

I love the Cure, Psychadelic Furs, and the Smiths and such. Phil Collins makes me agitated.

I love the Killers! They harken back to the 80's, for sure.

Exactly! It's either pop disguised as country or its extra twangy southern rock with an over the top accent and cliched lyrics that 30 years ago would have been seen as almost a parody.
