Most of the obvious ones seem to have been mentioned already (Smiths, Joy Division, Swans, etc) but my go to miserable-as-hell band is Red House Painters. The first mini album 'Down Colorful Hill' is one of the most mournful things in my collection, and never fails to remind me there's always someone more fed up than me. Best 'enjoyed' on a rainy night, on headphones, in the dark.

Porcupine Tree has got to be one of my all-time favorite bands, but I've heard a lot of people tell me they're depressing. I think it's true, some of their material is rather gloomy. Not all of it, but quite a lot of it. These are just a few of the ones I think are the gloomiest.

The music of Phillip Glass. Oy! Nothing says, "Slash your wrists" more than Phillip Glass. It could be his piano works or orchestral stuff. Doesn't matter.

I don't know if it's the repetition in his music, or the sparseness. When I hear it, it makes me feel like life is over, like all is lost. I think it must be the music they play just as you're entering hell. On either side of the signpost "Abandon Hope All Ye Who Enter" are speakers blasting Phillip Glass music.

Glass scored the Japanese suicide film "Mishima." Probably why I equate his music with death.

Here's some music to stare out the window of a moving vehicle at all the world going by without you.

I don't see how "Creep" is that depressing. It's on par with any other angsty self-deprecating 90s alternative hit song. If you want that kind of thing Nirvana did it better IMO. As for Radiohead, "The Bends", "OK Computer", "Kid A", and "Amnesiac", all have far more depressing material than "Creep".

These pieces are some of the saddest ones I know, but at the same time I find the endings in both of them to be incredibly uplifting!

My choices will show my age... These songs reflect my life emotionally. A few of my favorites...

I am a Rock - Simon & Garfunkel
Lucky Man - Emerson Lake & Palmer
Is This the Way Life's Meant to Be? - Electric Light Orchestra
Comfortably Numb - Pink Floyd

You won't find very much (if any) happy music in Pnk Floyd's music...
