Someone mentioned aspie athletes. I don't think Steve Prefontaine was a classic aspie, but may have had his toe dipped in the shallow end of the spectrum. He was social, but quirky. Single-minded, intense, argumentative, philosophical, justice-minded (to his own detriment). But, seemingly far greater a social facility than one would associate with aspies.
I do think that one of his opponants, Gerry Lindgren- someone you've probably never heard of - is on the spectrum. Both were track and cross-country running prodigies. Lindgren had far more rigid, fixated, extreme behavior regarding running. He had life-long difficulty dealing with the demands of the world and the people in it.
Prefontaine was a provocative and elusive character, Lindgren was perceived as thoroughly baffling. As aspies: Prefontaine, not likely; Lindgren, almost definitely.
