I'll be the first to say new metal is way better than old metal. The vocals are less shrieky and the lyrics are less about violence and have more range of heaviness and lyrical themes. The inclusion of singing as well as heavy vocals makes it way harder to do than most genres.

Disagree, there's no mentioning of violence in older metal at all. And at least metal in the 80's and 90's didn't have ret*d pig squeals *cough cough deathcore*

Well actually there is plenty of mention of violence.....as well as sex, drugs and the devil in the older metal. Just look at Black Sabbath, not that any of that is 'bad' to make lyrics about. Also what does deathcore have to do with today's metal other then that it's influenced by death metal but certainly not death metal or metal in general.

I don't just like heavy metal, I LOVE it! I tend to like underground metal (i.e. black metal, death metal) the best. A few of my favorites (in no particular order):

Dissection
Cannibal Corpse
Death
Dimmu Borgir
Bloodbath
Slayer
And one I don't know if I can mention because of their name, but I'll give you a hint: one of their songs is my profile name. They're probably my favorite band.

Not too keen on black metal, but every style of metal has at least a couple bands I like.

Parkway Drive and ATR are metal by their use of:
Screamed/growled vocals
High tempos
Blasts and double bass in their music
Distorted and often down tuned guitars

so, Black Sabbath aren't metal?

Black Sabbath is more metal than Parkway Drive and ATR......if those to are metal than I'm a bloody millionaire.

Going back to the beginning of this thread. Am I the only person who doesn't put any real importance on lyrics? Yes, good lyrics will make a good song even better, but for me, it won't turn a bad song into a good song and they won't stop me from liking a song that I would otherwise like.

So why do I think that heavy metal is noise?

Metal is extremely varied. If you want something that's more melodic, there are popular bands in the genre who do that, it only takes a little research.

If you think that way, then don't listen to it then. Shame your throwing in another stereotype......FAIL.

I agree with this opinion. Much (but but by no means all) of the music I listen to either contains unintelligible lyrics (various types of metal) or no lyrics (ambient, noise, jazz, classical). Music with no vocals is often more interesting than music with vocals. :)

I like lyrics. That being said, I don't remember much of the lyrics to Metal songs I've liked, but there are other songs in other styles I HAVE memorised. I think I'm going to write my own lyrics and music some time, and it does require attention to lyrics, even if you don't put them above all. Until I start playing, I could say I know more about lyrics than about music. I don't really get people who say they love music, and don't know anything about the way it's made - what do they love about it? I feel like I know a little about lyrics just because I know the lyrics themselves, which I can't say about notes or chords or anything like that now.

I studied piano and guitar for several years but only achieved relatively basic playing skills. I also sang in choir as a teen, but I think they just didn't want me to feel completely left out. However, I've never felt the desire to write lyrics -- not sure why.

In any case, even without much musical ability, one can still enjoy music. I revel in the enormous variety of sounds and the patterns formed by their combination.
