While this was a big hit because hitching rides was popular at the time it turned out it was a bad idea. Naive times. Fun song though.

I always loved this song! I can understand too how it was maybe a bad idea at the time.

I have so many fond memories of hitch-hiking in the 70s. It didn't have the negative connotations it has today.

That's cool :) I can see how it can have more negative connotations today then it did in the 70's.

The way the earlier thread that I started Songs About The Joy Of Listening To Music On The Radio has evolved it is a companion thread to this one.

I think the last post will be of interest to fans of this thread. I will repeat part of it here.
“ It is that time of the year again. On https://rewoundradio.com/ it is WLS-WCFL Rewound featuring airchecks from those Chicago stations from the heyday of the Top 40 format (mostly 60s and 70s). You get to hear the DJ’s, the commercials, the jingles, some newscasts and of course the songs. It is as close as you can get in 2024 to the experience of being back then and listening to those stations.

Those Chi town stations had powerful signals, thus people over a large part of the midwest grew up listening to them. This special will run through the entire 3 day holiday weekend.”

Thank you for sharing :) I'll have to take a listen!

Hitchhiking fell out of popularity because of several highly publicized incidents. One of them happened at my alma mata when I was a student there.

Ah ok. That's very sad that this happened. It definitely comes with risks as you don't know either the person you are picking up or who you're driving with if you're the one hitchhiking.

The decade of the 70s started with two songs that seem more relevant than ever now.
