It was mostly in the background playing kind of mid volume and the engine noises weren't too loud as I recall. They balanced it out pretty well I thought for the most part. Mostly the engine noises were loud at the beginning before the green light. Sometimes it would get slightly distracting but I was able to hyperfocus through it. During the license tests you had to do it could be a little distracting and that's when I would get the most irritated trying to qualify for some of them

I haven't played it in a long time since but if I played it today I probably would get distracted.
Ah, I'm used to having the engine and other car noises fairly loud so music just gets lost in the background. If they're not loud enough it's harder to remember to upshift.
I also hyperfocus while racing, which also kinda makes music redundant anyways since I don't have enough processing cycles left to even notice it.
