Could not agree more with what you said.

Seconded.

Huge electronic geek here. Anything from experimental to hardcore to dark electro to noise. Also into some punk and underground hip-hop.

<----- Avatar related. I also listen to Maynard James Keenan's (the singer for Tool whose album art for lateralus I proudly display) side project 'A Perfect Circle', Pink Floyd, George Winston, Franz Liszt's Hungarian Rhapsodies and Transcendental Etudes, and Chopin's mazurkas nocturnes and preludes.

Only my best friend listens to Tool and other than that I don't know a single person who truly appreciates any of the music I listen to.
I also compose on the piano soooo needless to say I enjoy that music as well ^_^

I'm not sure why but in my early 20's, I started really diggin' blues music. I even got snobby and thought blues music with electric guitar was too modern and I felt I could better relate to the otherness of rural acoustic blues. I'd listen to Robert Johnson and I could feel it pull at the "strangeness" inside me. I also got into the Carter Family (that's pre-Hank Williams country) as it's "wall of melancholy" just felt more authentic than anything emo. I got into Woody Guthrie and admired the simplicity and cleverness of his songs. Anything that seemed untouched by the "coolness" of modern radio was worth listening to heh

Over the years, I've listened to many genres and I can usually find something I like in each one :)

This video pretty much sums up popular music for me:

I think it would come down to specialisation and intensity. I don't usually do things casually and music is no exception. Rather, I'm more into exploring specific genres. That said, some music of any given specific genre will certainly also have popular appeal, I just also like other things far less popular also (such as Underworld being my favorite of the electronic genre, yet they are probably also one of the most well known electronic acts. That's not a problem for me).

This song may/may not fit the prerequisite for the OP, but, if you listen, you find that one of my favourite bands has a versatility that many bands cannot attain. And also I wanted to participate in a familiar thread and even more say hello to a familiar soul in hopes that she is doing alright. :D

Cheers.
