Gonna revive this thread.

Just got Blackwater Park and it is starting to get so complex with Opeth I need 10+ listens to take it in enough to get the feel of how the composition is. That almost never happens with me.

The Drapery Falls is intense...

Also Ganondox, I have to disagree with that. The production is too polished and they are mostly influenced by progressive rock.

Also, Opeth fans would probably LOVE In Mourning. They started as clones a bit and went in similar directions until they formed their own sound on their debut. However, if you were to clone a band...why not Opeth? It's an amazing sound. Warning: some of the vocals are baaaad on the demos.

I draw the arbitrary line at Ghost Reveries. It was the first album of theirs I heard and probably their last good one.

Still Life is totally my favorite.

Regarding what genre they are, progressive melodic metal with death and black metal influences.

My Arms, Your Hearse is easily Opeth's best album, nuff said. There's just something about the story behind the album, how it starts off with the spooky sound of the rainfall accompanied by piano and then April Ethereal kicks in and you know that they aren't messing around. It still feels fresh today as it did 14 years ago.

I first got into Opeth after seeing the video for Harvest on Youtube, which then convinced me to download Ghost Reveries. Cue the obligatory joys of being blown away and instantly hooked on their other material.

And this is why I don't try to get in genre debates. it always ends up with some convoluted genre that ends up making hundreds if not thousands of offshoots of fusion genres.

I see every Opeth fan has their individual favorites...cool. Mine is probably still Morningrise, though everything I've heard so far has been amazing.

Though I don't listen to them as much these days I used to be a lot bigger of a fan, and can credit “Still Life” in particular for helping me get into unclean metal vocals as a teen. I reckon the first 3 albums are still pretty good as well (especially MAYH with gems like “When” and “Demon of the Fall”).

I have all their albums except the newest and plan to make my old man a compilation of them (as well as Agalloch who he also loves) for part of an Xmas present.
(Yeah, I'm a cheap bastard, lol).

Quality > how much you pay for your rpesent. Today I gave my metal friend a mix CD of Ill Nino and Ankla so he could have latin metal for instance :D

Great band with a highly consistent discography; I like every one of their albums to some degree.

I was being mostly facetious. Sometimes being a genre snob/genre troll is fun. I once saw a debate arguing whether Opeth were "progressive melodic death metal" or "melodic progressive death metal".

Ah, I'm down with that.

I find them to be more progressive blues death melodic metalcore.

Actually that's a pretty accurate description of their current direction, minus the "death" part.
