I'm glad you mentioned Auto-Tune, because I think that is the single most annoying, godawful trend in music right now. It was annoying when Cher did it for "Believe", it's annoying when T-Pain does it, and it's annoying even when artists I generally like (like Filter or Bloc Party) do it. I liken Auto-Tune to Hollywood's fixation with CGI: the technology is seen as a magic fix for every little mistake, as well as an instant hit-maker-- but all too often, the end result is awkward, cold, and soulless, because there are certain human aspects you really can't replace with a machine. When I hear singers sing, I don't want to hear artificial pitch correction. I want to hear them
sing, the old fashioned-way, without the crutch of Auto-Tune. This is not to say that modifying the voice can't yield some interesting and creative results; Maynard James Keenan, Thom Yorke, Cedric Bixler-Zavala, and Karin Dreijer Andersson have all experimented at one time or another. But they have the vocal talent to back it up. To me, Auto-Tune automatically sounds like someone sloppily trying to cover up a lack of effort to make a quick buck-- and that's not what I feel music should be about.
That said, I agree, the most overrated artist right now is Lady Gaga. She's supposedly "different" from all the other pop acts out there now, but all I really see is another artist who elevates style over substance. Maybe it's just me, but I honestly don't care what the artist is wearing, so long as the music doesn't insult my intelligence.
