I'm nearly 39, so the popstars I liked when I was younger are all getting on (or dead in many cases). I saw Peter Gabriel on TV the other night and thought he was just like David Essex (another one of my favourites), and Tom Jones, for that matter. That was a bit of a shock. They're all 60+.

BTW OldFashioned, Almost 40 is not old, I can vouch for that. 8)

ivie anderson, with duke ellington's band- her version of "i got it bad [and that ain't good]" is for the ages. unfortunately, she was killed in a car wreck shortly after recording that song. i have the same affection for irene taylor and her signature version of "willow weep for me."

So what? I don't see anything wrong with it.....if you're going to listen to music you may as well listen to music you like. I listen to music for music I don't care about how the band members look or how old they are I care if I like the music.

90% of my favorite musicians are either at least 40 or dead. It's nothing to be embarrassed about.
The truth is that the majority of younger musicians will never be as good as the older musicians.
Just be happy that the majority of your favorite singers are still alive.

It really doesnt matter what everyone else thinks as long as you like it. It's music not making friends.
Just because they are older does not make them any less talented.

nobody but NOBODY [!] can beat the drums with as much panache as the greatest drummer that ever lived, the inimitable Chick Webb, who both gene krupa AND buddy rich listed as their primary influence. he was surely akin to the Pete Fountain of the drums, for sure. btw, Pete Fountain is the greatest clarinetist who ever lived, aside from sidney bechet. and Boots Randolph is the greatest tenor sax man that ever lived. and Dick Hyman is the 3rd greatest keyboardist [piano, moog synth, organ, wurlitzer] behind the inimitable Fats Waller and Mozart.

I'm the opposite. I tend to be a fan of the younger singers. People think pedophile or ret*d when a 29year-old guy likes music artist on Disney & Nickelodeon.

Not really pedophile but rather ret*d xD
No, it's ok, I just begrudge those teen stars who get pushed by a label for looking handsome while they have absolutely no musical or intellectual qualities.
They don't deserve their fame, no matter if their music touches people however this is possible, and I'm totally jaelous. Those kids were luckier than everybody who won in the lottery twice in the same year. How could anybody love them and not hate them for being so cruelly lucky?

It is if you listen to the girl singers because you like how they look. That is NOT why I listen to them & I'm NOT attracted to them but some assume that's why.
I agree about them just being lucky. Most of them don't really have any talent but got where they were because they somehow had connections or were discovered by someone who did. About the only one I can really respect is Miranda Cosgrove because she's the most wholesome & down to earth one there is rite now. She's the only one of them who's a good role-model & she's actully pretty smart(she's planning on going to college in the fall)

I run into a similar problem with my musical tastes. I don't really like Disney singers, I try not to despise them or anything, but one song I love in particular is Vanessa Carlton - 1000 Miles. You can see where this is going already... Anyway, my favorite kinda music, is usually really girly pop music, especially eurobeat.

I'm guessing people think quite oddly of a sorta normal looking 20 year old guy with a goatee listening to this kinda stuff. Oh well, it's the best though.

I think if I were to make a wager of what attracts us to girly music like this, is the lack of pretension it has. It's not trying to save the world, it's not trying to be super artistic, there's a time and a place for all that kinda stuff, but most of the time I just wanna hear nice happy music that'll cheer me up and make me feel good.

Seeing Leonard Cohen posted reminded me of Jeff Buckley, as Jeff sang a song called Hallelujah which was written by Cohen.

Jeff Buckley drowned long before I ever heard of his music. When I found out he had died a long time ago, I mourned his death for months. It seemed like existence had suffered a great loss. I am pretty sure he was an undiagnosed Aspie. His voice is sultry and ethereal with incredible range. Maybe you will fancy him.

Why do you think Jeff Buckley was an Aspie?

We can never know for sure and it doesn't really matter, but, there is something in his expressions (and I am quite good at finding Aspies in a crowd) , his utter single minded dedication to music that consumed his entire existence and obvious genius, the fact that he was in it for the creation of music, not for money, the lyrics in some songs, the way he moves when he sings, the fact that he sings with his eyes closed 99% of the time, was said to be eccentric, rarely seems to have his hair brushed even when being filmed, had troubled relationships, self medicating with marijuana, needing a lot of alone time, occasional outbursts.

I am sure these things could be said about many musicians in fragments and I am not attached to the thought that he was an Aspie. It just seems like he may have been.

"Words are beautiful but restricted. They're very masculine, with a compact frame. But voice is over the dark, the place where there's nothing to hang on: it comes from a part of yourself that simply knows, expresses itself, and is."

"I don't have any allegiance to an organized religion; I have an allegiance to the gifts that I find for myself in those religions... I'd rather be non-denominational, except for music. I prefer to learn everything through music. If you want divinity, the music in every human being and their love for music is pretty much it. It's the big indication of their spirituality and their ability to love and make love, or feel pain or joy, and really manifest it, really be real. But I don't believe in a big guy with a beard on a throne, telling us that we're bad; I certainly don't believe in original sin. I believe in the opposite of that: you have an Eden immediately from the time you are born, but as you are conditioned by your caretakers and your surroundings, you may lose that original thing. Your task is to get back to it, to claim responsibility for your own perfection."
