from the modern era it would be frank zappa and jimi hendrix.

from past era's my favourite composer is mozart then beethoven.

i am not sure whether beethoven was a good musician however. i have never heard any stories about how well he played the piano.

i read a biography about mozart, and there was a story about an eminent woman cellist who was jealous of the acclaim that mozart was getting when he was only 10 years old.
she challenged him to play one of her compositions on piano (or harpsichord possibly) after hearing her play it only once. there was a large audience that was present, and he played her entire piece, and not only that, but he extended her piece into a 30 minute masterpiece and developed it so ingeniously, that her piece seemed like merely the prelude to the main song that he composed spontaneously from her piece. she apparently ran out of the auditorium before he finished his performance.

'tis a tie between fats waller and chick webb- each was the master of his respective domain, with fats the king of all keyboards [pipe organ, hammond and piano] and chick the dominator on the drumkit. if the incomparable pete fountain were in the heavenly band, then it would be a three-way tie, as he is the lord of the licorice stick, and the greatest clarinetist that ever lived.

Chick Webb is highly under rated I find, people tend to focus on Buddy Rich or Max Roach.

buddy rich cribbed a major part of his style off of chick webb, as did gene krupa. btw, each of those two men said the other was the better drummer. and i forgot to mention the best male vocalist of all time, IMHO- namely the late johnny desmond, known as the "GI sinatra." he crooned both in german as well as in english.

I love it when I can guess what people would say. Well, it's not entirely surprising, considering your nickname. :P

I actually don't listen to Mayhem that much, I just love Dead's vocals.

Lyrically I think Ian Curtis, and in terms of contribution to the musical outfit he was in - Pete De Freitas from Echo & The Bunnymen.

It took me a day to write the answer I would have written anyway. :?
