When you want to get serious I recommend Fl Studio 9 or thhe program that uses CakeWalk. I personally prefer composing in my mind and have written stuff on paper instead.

You can get any music software for "free" depends on your morals.

I hate acquiring "free" software but whens it's so ridiculously priced, I don't mind.

As for good music software I like FL Studio and Pro Tools.

Indeed...there was a time in my career when I had less-than-pure scruples. Nowadays I'll use the free stuff that's available if it gets the job done, but I'm also willing to pay for professional tools as needed and as affordable. I have pretty much everything I need at the moment. I haven't bought any upgrades in probably 3 years, but with the software I use I haven't seen the addition of useful enough features that justify investing in it at this time.

My outdated software is Reason 4, Absynth 4, and Finale 2009. The last upgrade I purchased was Logic Pro Studio 9, and I've been using Logic since Logic 7 (with the dongle).
