I like the Nixon era "proto rap" of Gil Scott Heron. "The Gun", "The Bottle", and the heart wrenching "Home is where the hatred is".
Actual rap is an acquired taste for an oldster like me, but..
Few songs in pop beat "The Message" by Grand Master Flash in power.
Ex Fugee Wyclef Jean is surprisingly easy to like for oldsters like me if you give him a listen. Lite on the BS: bragging, profanity, and N words, and heavy on talking about actual topics: like the world situation, and the immigrant experience, and etc. over decent music beds. (sorry Wyclef, I know that that is the kiss of death!).
Do have a soft spot for fun party rap like "Busta Move" by Young MC., I get off on much of Pit Bull, and his party friendly stuff., and of course SaltNPepa "Push it".
And rap has it's share of stuff that so bad that its good.
From the guy who never sleeps:
From the guy who likes his gravy lumpy:
The less said about this song...the better!
