Perhaps a bit cliché for the subject of the thread, but this song has gotten so many people (including myself) through difficult times that I would be remiss if I didn't post it anyway.

My contribution, 'Mooie Dag' (Beautiful Day), by Dutch band Bløf. With translation of the lyrics below. The song has a sting in its tail, that does it for me:

The sun, the sand
The heat, and the gentle river
The silence and the dryness
And the emptiness of this place

The sky and the ground
The vastness of this land
And the wisdom of one man
That's enough

Chorus:

There's nothing I'm waiting for
Tomorrow, it will remain night
I ponder my worries and the world
And all the times I lay awake, I concluded
What a beautiful day, what a beautiful day

The soil, the grass
The roads to the horizon that trembles
Time is space here
The depth here is wild

The nonsense and the necessity
They're nearing the edge
The love of a single person
Was enough for me

Repeat chorus

There's nothing I'm waiting for
Tomorrow, it will remain night
I ponder my worries and the world
And all the times I lay awake, I concluded
What a beautiful day, what a beautiful day

What a beautiful day, what a beautiful day
To die

Not sure if it's been mentioned...but Gloomy Sunday by Sarah McLachlan. It's not the original version, but the lyrics in combination with Sarah's haunting voice is amazing.

You win the battle. The war is not over. You long time friend is killed. All you could do was stand there and watch.

You fought as hard as you could and you're on the verge of giving up but you won't and yet you're near death as your enemy crushes your every attempt to stand on your feet because you still try to. Note: I'm not referring to Kimimaro whatsoever. This is what I picture when I hear this.

The fight is over. You and your friend are both dying. Your life is mysteriously saved while your friend enters the afterlife. You keep a memento of what is left of him to carry on his spirit while you fight another day.

Does anybody have more sad songs from the 1980s that could fit this category?

Ana Gabriel is pretty great. I ended up buying En Vivo for a buck at a thrift store, and for a while, it was one of my most played albums. I heard one of her songs in a figure skating comp thing, so I figured I'd like the album for a buck, one of the best purchases of my life, imo.

I'm a big anime fan, and Duvet by BoA is a song that I like to listen to when I'm feeling down, it's melancholy but somehow calming.

For those who are unfamiliar, it's the song used in the opening for the anime Serial Experiments Lain, which is about a girl who goes from receiving her first ever computer to becoming a superhacker and eventually achieving the singularity and becoming a goddess of the Internet. It's really interesting.

If you listen to the lyrics to either Duvet or Duvet Cyberia Remix (a soft electronica remix that I prefer more over the original), it doesn't sound like it has anything to do with the premise of Lain, but that's how I first heard of it. I listen to it a lot when dealing with loss (either death of a friend or breaking up with a love interest, etc.) Even though the song is melancholic and sad, it has a carthatic effect on my own sadness, and after about 2-3 loops of it I usually feel better. Not necessarily happy, but at least at peace.
