I'm not sure why you need to ask that, since Metal is one of the most popular genres of music, and always had a faithful crowd.

But they're not mainstream, and they never were. It just has a large underground fan base. But Rock Music in general doesn't seem to get played on the radio anymore these days.

Metal has been mainstream at various points. Particularly the 80's. Bands like Iron Maiden, Judas Priest, Black Sabbath, I'd never call them "obscure" by any means.

Where do you live? I'm considering that America has several radio stations specialising in rock. There are large metal festivals being held out around the world each year.

'Not mainstream' is just something people say to look cool. :?

The only metal band in your list is Metallica (and they became a hard rock band when they made the self-titled album). Really I was kind of stretching it with Black Sabbath.

They are Hard Rock/Metal bands. No, they aren't solidly metal, but they are more metal than most hard rock rock bands.

No. Digital downloads are far too convenient and much easier to carry around than heavy music.
