My guess is its because music/singing evolved as a way to attract mate at first (that's why birds do it yes?)

Probably this.

What I wonder is why, at every wedding reception I've ever been to where there's a DJ, at some point they play "Mack the Knife." I mean, huh?

I guess stabbing is supposed to represent the sex act or something?

Ive worked for a party deejay company for years doing mostly weddings, and I have not observed that.

Its a still popular oldy that gets requested from time to time. But its not like "wonderful tonight", or "celebration", or the "electric slide" that you play at every darn wedding.

I doubt Steely Dan Haitian divorce gets played at weddings a lot fo the time but it would be ironic. Although some guests would not be amused.

Love songs are relatable. Everyone has a hopeless romantic in them, so love songs are kind of universal, even in a place like the metal scene. They sell like crazy. But I can't hate them, I can't help but get mushy when I hear the duet version of "Broken" by Seether.

Maybe it was a generational thing. I haven't been to a wedding recently, mostly for people my age or within 10 years or so in age. But for years there, I heard it at every single wedding reception!

This.

Music videos make things even worse. Nowadays, people only care about music videos. To find an excuse to display those crappy videos, producers need music. Lyrics about love are easy to write, anything about love can be accepted by society.

For god's sake, wtf is this sh*t?:

''You know you love me
I know you care
Just shout whenever,
And I'll be there
You want my love
You want my heart
And we would never, ever, ever be apart''

:x

When I was training for the job and observing other deejays -one deejay (younger but more experinced in the job than I) mentioned that he got in trouble for playing "please release me [ and let me go]" at a wedding!

Got me laughing my ass off.

Oddly enough years latter I had couple, in their advance list of required songs, actually REQUEST "Please Release Me".

I asked them the obvious question on the phone- while going over other stuff with them- turns out that someone in the bridal party just always dug the sound of the song-so they all wanted to hear it.

So when the time came I got on the mic and made sure to make it clear to all that it was a "request" ( ie not MY pick).

As someone who listens mostly to prog and metal. Love is an unusual theme. Its almost alittle exciting when artists get personal in those genres.

This reminds me of a Paul McCartney song asking "Why people have had enough of silly love songs" and "Why do people wanna fill the world with silly love songs." and he replies with "Whats wrong with that.".

Why are most songs about love?

Well, assuming your premise is true-- which very well may be the case-- I suspect it would have to do with two key factors:

1) Love is, as has been mentioned here, a universal (or near universal) human experience, and

2) Love (usually) feels good.

Simple as that. Love affects the majority of people, and feels good. Love has been hardwired into the human species as incentive for procreation, which is the ultimate biological imperative for pretty much any species. Love ensures the continued survival of the human race; therefore, it has been a paramount focus of human arts and culture for millennia. It's not rocket science-- it's animal instinct.
