There was a really good one called The Devils Blood, but they broke up

Anyways here is a song of theirs:

So sad they broke up, not sure if their was animosity or if they just decided to split ways and do their own projects...I did get to see them opening for Dimmu Borgir I think it was though. But yeah when I first heard them I did not know the singer was a female....when I found out they where female I was impressed cause I like how they don't have a super girly voice.

Also Nightwish when they had this singer:

Hell yeah!

Pretty obscure. You would only know these songs if you listened to college radio in 1980-1981

Mitch Easterhttp://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Mitch_Easter on guitar and drums.

Vanessa Briscoe Hay from Pylon -Maybe someday she will get the recognition she deserves. "When Rolling Stone named R.E.M. "America's Best Band" in November 1987, R.E.M. drummer Bill Berry said, "We're not the best rock 'n' roll band in America." Pylon, he said, was the best" (source Wikipedia)

Pagan metal. Masha can really deathgrowl.

Post-metal. The vocalist Julie Christmas was also in Made Out Of Babies (also post-metal).

Couldn't let this thread go without Garbage.

On the lighter side of things.

I don't think the distinction between a male or female lead singer is very important, but I always liked The Cardigans. They actually made my favorite version of the Iron Man theme.

No Doubt and Eve's Plum were also good in their day.

Female fronted acts were almost unheard of in 1970's Progressive Rock. Sonja Kristina was an exception.
