I think he's almost done. There's a bunch of Winds of Winter preview chapters released by George from convention readings and such. There's a list of them here:

http://www.tor.com/blogs/2014/03/how-mu ... ter-is-out

The Dunk and Egg stories are excellent too. These are the stories that Old Nan told to Bran in GOT. They are about an honourable but penniless hedge knight, who has an impudent squire that turns out to be a Targaryen heir to the throne of Westeros. They are set well before GOT. So far the only ASOIAF character to make an appearance has been Bloodraven, who will live to become the three-eyed crow.

^^^Concerning Dunk and Egg, what would you recommend, the original text version or the comic adaptations?

I'm leaning toward the comics because I like comics and they are available for kindle.

I would be very surprised if the next book wasn't out next year based on his statements here:

According to Michelle Fairly there will be no SH in the series. I would expect them to say this even if she were in the show to increase shock value.

I was hoping Winds of Winter would be out this fall... But, I'm inclined to agree with you. I don't think it will be out until next year.

Then, only the red god knows how long before we get the last book!

I've been sulking about season 4 not being released in the US yet. But I guess I shouldn't be so impatient. Once I watch season 4, I'll have a LONG wait for any new material from the main story.

I did read somewhere that they were planning a heavily illustrated collected edition of the first three Dunk and Egg novellas. So, I guess I'll have to make due with that and this new History of Westeros book coming out in the fall.

My current theory about the main story (just my speculation, not spoilers)-- Jon Snow is a Targaryen! I think he's Ned stark's nephew and the son of prince Rhaegar and Lyanna Stark.

I also think that he'll be the hero of the war with THE Others.

Tyrian's quote about having "a tender spot in my heart for cripples and bastards and broken things." Is going to turn out to be the most significant foreshadowing in the whole series.

All GRRM's 'heroes' are cripples and bastards and broken things-- Tyrian, Jon Snow, Brienne, Bran... Even Jaime Lannister started to reform once he had his hand chopped off!

The three Dragon Knights at the end of the story will be a cripple (not sure who), a bastard (Jon Snow), and a broken thing (not sure who).
It could be Bran, Jon and Arya (she qualifies as broken), but I think that's a bit too obvious.

It looks like Bran is going to be an "old god" for sure. I guess he could still control a dragon...

That's the generally agreed upon 'official theory', and there is an awful lot of foreshadowing supporting it. My personal theory is that it ties into the title, that Jon Snow is 'Ice" and Daenerys Targaryen is 'Fire', and that they'll make up two of the three dragon riders, still trying to make up my mind on the third.

After finishing A Dance With Dragons and going back to rewatch the series, I'm getting the impression that Littlefinger and Varys are THE master wirepullers of the tale. I think that, in the end, they will be the only real players in this game of thrones.

Yes, and add Bloodraven to that list too, I think.

Maybe. Here's my theory:

"When I hit the steel it sings."
-Gendry.

"Ice" a.k.a "Oathkeeper"

Fire:
Quote:
There will come a day after a long summer when the stars bleed and the cold breath of darkness falls heavy on the world. In this dread hour a warrior shall draw from the fire a burning sword. And that sword shall be Lightbringer, the Red Sword of Heroes, and he who clasps it shall be Azor Ahai come again, and the darkness shall flee before him.
Clash of Kings 10, Davos.

It's possible that the song of Ice and Fire refers to the "song" of these weapons clashing in combat, or the reforging of these weapons by Gendry. What's interesting about this second theory is that as of Dance with Dragons, Ice/ Oathkeeper, Gendry, and The Brotherhood without Banners: an Azor Ahai cult, are currently in the same location. Perhaps Gendry is going to reforge Oathkeeper into a new Lightbringer.

What do people think of the, "The Hound is alive and well in AFFC and living as a gravedigger on the Quiet Isle", theory?

I agree that Bloodraven should be added to the list of wirepullers for sure.

Also, I like the idea of Gendry forging an authentic Lightbringer, because the sword Stannis has is not lightbringer.

I also thought about the Hound being alive and working as the gravedigger at the monastery. I hope he isn't dead. His arc is too interesting to 'dead end' in death.

I agree with that theory, on the grounds that nothing is incidental when writing, especially with this author, and that he'd put a lot of time into The Hound to end him so anti-climatically. Personally, I think he'll return to kill his undead brother, perhaps with his new found faith.
