My all-time favorite game score is for Super Mario RPG by Yoko Shimomura. It has a pleasant sound with nice melodies, and they helped me to really enjoy the experience of playing through the game. Need I mention "Beware the Forest's Mushrooms"?

I really like orchestrated game scores. Two examples that come to mind are Knights of the Old Republic II and Star Fox: Assault.

Most Nintendo series have music that I like, particularly the Mario, Zelda, and Star Fox series.

Most every game from Rare all had great music, but my favorites are from David Wise or Grant Kirkhope.

The Smash Bros. series is a great compilation of Nintendo's music, with plenty of good original themes as well. Just listen to Nobuo Uematsu's new theme for Brawl.

Blaster master for NES had some catchy music, especially the first level music.

Oh, also Star Fox: Command for the DS actually had a pretty extensive score by Hajime Wakai. There were themes for every playable character (there are about a dozen - I can't remember them all right now). Some people have likened it to SNES-era RPG scores.

Mega Man and Final Fantasy music are my VGMusic favorites

"Heroe of Heroes" and "The Biggest Fight", from the game Dragon Ball GT Final Bout are cool songs.

I have heaps of favorite gaming soundtracks.

-Any Zelda game, especially the latest ones in the series
-FF series
-Donkey Kong Country series (especially DKC2...loved so much of the music in that game)
-Perfect Dark (Rareware had some great classic soundtracks)
-Metroid Prime series (I know a lot of people hate the MP music, but I think it's ingenious...so incredibly alien and mechanical, I love it)
-Golden Sun 1 and 2 for GBA

Heaps more, those are just off the top of my head.

Donkey Kong Country 2 does have a rather distinguished soundtrack. It almost had an "epic" feel to it at times, even though the game was kind of goofy.

Sonic 3/Sonic & Knuckles had some of the best music on the Mega Drive/Genesis of any game I've owned.

But some of the best game soundtracks come from the oldskool C64's SID chip. Have a listen to tunes by geniuses such as Rob Hubbard, Jeroen Tel, Martin Galway and Tim Follin at www.lemon64.com/music

I love the Tetris theme song.

I also enjoy the music in the Donkey Kong games for the SNES.

Final Fantasy series - Beautiful
SNES Donkey Kong (Especially DK2 as DejaQ pointed out too) - Enchanting
Sonic 1-3 for Genesis/MD - Funky
Most C64 tunes by Rob Hubbard - Childhood memories

There's more than that, but that's what I could come to think of straight away.

Off the top of my head the two best overall soundtracks I can think of are
1. Final Fantasy VI (SNES, GBA)
2. Jet Force Gemini (N64)

Both are impressive in their composition, and in how they use the hardware. Neither of them use pre-rendered music, like in many modern games.

Zelda 64 made good use of non-prerendered music too, like in the overworld theme. I can't think of many other games that use that technique of music changing depending on what you're doing in the game.

Also, the Metal Gear Solid series have pretty good soundtracks, even if the music isn't often incorporated in the game, more in cutscenes.
