...I had thought she had died , ironically :( , from what amounted to a heart attack " from being too overweight " , as , though she was recovering and eating more normally , her system was weakened from all her anorexia :( , and so what she ate was more like eating far more fatty st7uff to her system .
Okay , the inevitable question now ~ Think either/both she and Richard were Aspies ?????????

I understand Karen had a nice voice, but i always wondered why Richard never got to sing lead on anything. It made me feel sorry for Richard- because everyone fell over Karen's voice and because she was pretty and and a female. But he did most of the arranging, composing, and instrumentation and he didn't get much credit. While she got all the glory.

Don't feel sorry for him. He gets all of the royalties, plus gets top billing on the marquee of the "Richard & Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center".
Quote:
The Richard and Karen Carpenter Performing Arts Center with a 1,074-seat capacity is located on the campus of California State University, Long Beach. The Richard & Karen Carpenter Exhibit, a permanent display of awards and memorabilia of the popular music duo, Carpenters, is open at all Carpenter Center events, and by appointment. Richard Carpenter and his family graciously support the efforts of the Carpenter Center philanthropically, but are not involved in the day-to-day operation of the facility.
Karen had the better voice, the better stage presence, and she was much better-looking than Richard. He wisely stepped back and let her be the face and voice of The Carpenters, so that the band would be more popular -- it's just good business.

Sounds like sexism to me. Because she is pretty and female she gets all the attention. Well of course she was better looking than Richard. But if you ask me, she sounds quite the same on every song, and her voice is saccharine. Richard singing would add more variety.

And how is your musical career these days?

I've had the same discussion with many disgruntled musicians whose careers never went any further than an occasional wedding reception or showcase jam, and innumerable demo recordings.

The Carpenters were successful due to Karen's voice, charisma, and wholesome looks. Learn to deal with it.

I think Richard was happy to let Karen do the singing.

...Initially , the Carpenters' public image was rather decidedly wound in with the " culture wars " of that (R. M. Nixon) era as they very much came off as " on the ' older generation ''s side, unusually for " young people of that time - Maybe after all these years that's rather faded away .
Did they vote/donate conservative/for Tricky , say ? Maybe they did ! !! !! !! !! !! ! So did the majority of 18-20 Americans who first voted in '72 !

...Yes , some of their songs could be a bit " twinky "/saccarine(Sp??)~ To an extent , it's her death that led to people " listening closer " ~ Made her " hip " 8) ! ~I think I said what I had to say about (w/a variant of the " Be My Baby " drum riff) " Only Yesterday " already , didn't I ?

On a lighter note: even though the Carpenters were thought of at the time as the opposite of the Counter Culture, and are still thought of as the epitome of conventional pop- they did a cover version of the song "Attention all Inhabitants of Interplanetary Craft" - originally by the band Klaatu (the epitome of late sixties deep psychedelia).

It wasn't exactly a "hit" for the Carpenters, but the ten minute long friendly musical greeting to the alien crews of UFOs is an interesting tidbit for collectors of oddball music (like me). And their version of the song is the official anthem of some UFO group (forget the name of the organization).

Mary-Ann or Ginger?

Karen Carpenter or Farrah Fawcett?
