Speaking of Japanese music, I've a fair liking to Polysics and YMO. ;)

Very true.
Ah, my favorite band next to Metronome who has the same lead singer as Metronome redid PIKE (into BIKE) by the Polysics, very cool version. I have a friend who's seen Polysics too.

Whether someone has good or bad taste in music is an opinion. People should listen to the music they like, regardless of what anyone else thinks of it.

It's what you like and if you like it, it shouldn't matter to others. I'm currently into the heavy dance music scene and not alot of people like that but hey.

I agree.
I'm not planning on changing the music I listen to based on what other people think. It just pisses me off that people think these bands are s**t when they're not.

You should probably try to like other genres. People who only listen to one or two kinds of music generally end up having terrible taste in music. My advice would be to listen to metal/industrial bands that incorporate other concepts into their sound. In other words, progressive metal such as Dream Theater or Mastodon. There you'll discover new sounds and ideas in a familiar form. Then you can move on to other kinds of music that share the new concepts but are not metal/industrial. I used to really love some bands that I can't even stand anymore after being introduced to better stuff. In a year or two you might not even like Rammstein anymore if you explore everything music has to offer.

Yeah, I listen to lots of different kinds of metal, I like melodic death metal, progressive, doom, viking. I also listen to other genres that aren't metal: I like Radiohead etc. So I do listen to lots of different kinds of music, it's just that most of the bands I like the most are metal.

Arch Enemy

I saw them live at the hop and grape (its called academy 3 or something now) a few years ago. I only really liked a couple of their songs (mostly off the Enemy Within Album) but the show wasn't bad apart from the fact that I got elbowed in the face by some drunk woman (I was on the outside of the pit but if you have ever been to the hope and grape/academy 3 you will know how small a room it is so it is impossible to avoid getting hurt in a venue like that when seeing a band like AE. I liked a few Carcass songs as well (that was another band the Amott brothers where in).

btw, Angela Gossow seemed like such a nice lady for someone involved in extreme metal; the amott guys seemed cool too.

You really should check out some Electronic music, not the crappy Techno kind but more of the line of Experimental/IDM/Ambient. Aphex Twin, Boards of Canada and Squarepusher are all good, as well as a shedload more.

Thats another band I have seen live, they were a great live act and gave a good, long show (circa 3 hours). I got into them when Awake came out and I still think that is one of their best albums but I tend to prefer their instrumental tracks such as Erotomania, Dance of Eternity etc. I think the singer (La Brie) tends to ruin a lot of the songs live but he wasn't too bad when I saw them.

It isn't always the case; when I first started getting into Art music and Jazz (as opposed to pop/rock/metal etc.) I sometimes felt like I couldn't be bothered listening to the rock stuff anymore as there wasn't as much happening with it as the other stuff but then I quickly found that I still go back to it a lot and listen to a lot of pop/rock/metal stuff now, especially Opeth recently (another great gig I went to incidentally and they really were the coolest guys).

It is like drinking fancy wines; they are all well and good but sometimes you just want a plain, simple beer.

I don't see any point in caring what anyone thinks of your musical taste. It is way too subjective. There is no such thing as a universal measure of taste. Listen to what you like. And the fact that you listen to underground metal at all makes you more open-minded than a lot of the common population. If you have an interest in other genres they will grow naturally. How can anyone really know what you will like? Suggesting something based on your current interests is one thing but I don't agree with someone saying " you SHOULD" listen to this or that.

I think maybe people attacked you in that other thread because you set yourself up for it by saying "Rammstein is the best band in the world". That is a highly subjective statement in itself - of course everyone has a different idea of who is best (for them).

The whole "my favorite band is better than your favorite band" kind of debate seems pointless to me.

My sister is very mainstream and doesn't have a clue about underground music but I don't bother try to "convert" her to what I consider better music or make fun of her tastes. She enjoys what she listens to and probably wouldn't like or relate to underground stuff at all. I just accept that we have different tastes and move on.

From your list I enjoy Amon Amarth, Katatonia and some of the older Amorphis stuff. I've heard of some of the others but am not very familiar with them.

im not really familiar with most of those bands say what you will but i try to avoid the bigger metal bands imo smaller bands are frequently better .... but theres an effort factor involved that i dont really have either so yea ......... music

but my friends dont like most of the bands i listen to, hell a good friend of mine considers that metal merely exists to be an insult ..... but why should anyone else care what you listen to unless you have it going really loud on a bus or something

OK, maybe I should have phrased the title better. This isn't about me; it's about the bands. I'm still going to lidten to the same music, regardless of what other people think. It just pisses me off when people say they're s**t. Just like it pisses me off when people say history is boring pr dogs are better than cats.
