For some reason, my browser didn't show the youtube videos on this forum. I saw it later when I read this on my phone and seeing the songs people are posting I can get a better idea of what kind of music people are talking about.

So far, I think the songs posted on here so far actually share a lot of characteristics with heavy metal. Especially with how the bass and the drums interact with each other. If the guitar were more distorted and the instruments came together to emphasize the most of the notes, you would pretty much have a heavy metal song. The two genres aren't very far away from each other at least from what I can hear.

I did more research and apparently this kind of music is getting into more of the Gothic Rock genre which actually overlaps with Post Punk and New Wave and getting this deep into genres honestly makes my head hurt, so....

I've found it better to describe music using bands then actual genres because one genre can describe a lot of different sounds. I had a better idea of what kind of music people were talking about here when they posted example songs so I can see the similarities between Post Punk and Heavy Metal. I actually argued about this with one of my music teachers but he seemed to disagree. Maybe I can understand why because maybe people have different ideas for the same band...but you can say the same thing for genres as someone said here before, so....my head is hurting again

Anyway, sorry, this was a digression. I'm not trying to make this thread about genre theory. This post was originally a lot longer and I realized I needed to cut it down, haha

We've done that for one of the bands I'm in, but I'm not sure what bands my solo stuff sounds like. I've heard lots of different comparisons.

Currently, I'd say maybe the Cranberries, just because of that overwhelmingly Fender sound.

I haven't delved too far into post punk, though I do like Joy Division.

They're a classic band! If you like JD, I'd also recommend checking out The Sound, The Chameleons, Asylum Party and the Comsat Angels. (And New Order, of course.)

If I had my way, the dictionary definition of "heavy metal" would be an image of Iron Maiden.

I know most people would disagree, though

Me to, I mean Iron Maiden is the band that really got me into metal. They used to have a program on VH1 where they played metal videos from the 80's, there was a lot of hair metal which I admit I do like hair metal not all but quite a bit. But yeah the Iron Maiden song Number of the Beast came on and I am pretty sure I transformed into a metal-head while listening to that song. Like before that I had heard system of a down, korn and cradle of filth but none of those bands quite grabbed me...wasn't till I heard Iron Maidens number of the beast on that t.v program that really got me into metal music. Its like that song captured my soul so now I have to listen to metal.

Oh, boy, we've jumped down the rabbit hole of music genres! This is always fun ^^

Getting into seeing patterns and catagorizing them on an autism forum, what a surprise. :D

Although most label the Talking Heads and Devo as Post Punk I don’t. The uber quirky, jumpy acts from that period will always be new wave to me.

Well I admit I am not so familiar with what new wave means, I mean I am not a punk so I am not so much knowlegable as to what all sub-genres and stuff there is. But basically I like stuff like Joy Division which I understand gets typically catogorized as post punk. But then even some of Pink Floyd reminds me of Joy Division...its kind of hard to describe I guess...but I really like stuff that sounds like Joy Division. I also like the B- 52s not quite post punk but just similar enough that I really like them. Perhaps some of what I like is more progressive rock/punk? I mean hell I can talk about some metal genres all day but when it comes to other types of music I am more ignorant.

I get what you mean about it making your head hurt....lol there are so many different categories and sub-genres of music it is ridiculous. But yeah I mean I like some goth stuff to, because it sounds quite tied in with post punk sounding stuff. I mean in High-school people called me goth because I wore black a lot, I mean my favorite color to wear. But at that point I didn't even really know what goth music was. Since then I have listened to some and enjoy it. But its certainly not like what I listened to in HS. So it kind of bothers me, I was never a 'goth' in high-school I didn
t even know what that meant that is how naive I was. But I still got called that a lot for wearing black...and I didn't really discover goth rock type music till I was in my 20s and than figured out it was totally different than what high-school kids stereotyped it as.

basically my experience has been wandering lost in this strange world, never quite sure what path I should follow, feeling like I am lost among other people. I want to save the environment and help wildlife maybe the only way I can is to get a sh***y job and use my off days to volunteer to gain some work worthy experience.

For me, it was a friend in middle school who made me a couple of mix tapes. It had Down, PanterA, Machine Head, Black Sabbath, MetallicA, and a few other assorted songs.

I borrowed CDs of PanterA - Cowboys from Hell, and Black Sabbath - Paranoid from my uncle, my brother bought a cassette of MetallicA - Ride the Lightning, and it went downhill pretty fast from there.

I know a lot of people credit Sabbath, Zeppelin, or Deep Purple for inventing metal, but when I think of heavy metal, I immediately think of the sound and image of Iron Maiden, or the countless bands who came afterward and imitated their style.

The Rock Show? I used to watch that all the time in high school (before it got cancelled). They really did play a LOT of Iron Maiden, and Rush. I loved it.
