How were they politically as adults?

I do understand the school of thought which seems to keep the writers’ personal life out of criticism.

Did you read this yet?

EMILY

Emily was considered a religious heretic, and politically scandalous.
Charlotte and Anne were raised as strict Evangelicals by their father and their Methodist aunt. Branwell became an alcoholic and opium addict who rejected the church but was himself a talented writer and artist.

The children followed politics their entire lives, reading Blackwood's and debating chartism / the luddite movement and political reform their entire lives.

@Kortie
I'm going to start reading more academic papers now, and I'll let you go for your luncheon.
Hang in there. We're all thinking of you!

(There'll be more WH posts to keep your mind busy when you return, I'm sure).

Emily Bronte might have had some commonalities with Emily Dickinson.

Both were self-assured in their personal philosophies; yet both were rather shy in public gatherings. The “irony” which this author is referring to.

Both decried the cowardice of those who were unsteady in their convictions.

I agree. Emily Jane is often considered to have had Aspergers or Autism because of her reclusive nature, her obsession with animals (she had hawks, geese, bull mastiffs, etc), her love for the moors, and her tendency to suffer meltdowns when provoked by social demands. She was extremely private, and all we really know of her is what was transcribed by Charlotte's first biographer, Elizabeth Gaskell. Many people criticised Emily because her novel is so dark, but without knowing the German tradition from whence it was written. Her poetry is sublime -- Romanticism at its finest.

feels! I was about to send out the dogs to look for you!
I'm glad you checked in!

Correction to April - I checked and it's closer to 300 pages depending on the edition but I hope that's still OK.

I've written 16 pages of notes on the intro essays from my annotated copy.
Don't worry though, I'll tame myself! I always keep notes when I read!

The best way to set this group up is either a goodreads group or on voxer.
