Stretching the topic a bit:

Quote:
Marilyn Manson did a good cover of Personal Jesus.

I like Johnny Cash's cover of that song. When he says "Pick up the receiver I'll make you a believer", you will think that he certainly can.

Quote:
song of the siren - the version by This Mortal Coil is sublime, and that's the ONLY version which should be legal

This is the song that my wife and I danced to as our first dance at our wedding reception. I think that I must agree with you.

If anybody wants to hear a strange cover, try "Straight Outta Compton" by Nina Gordon. She used to have it for download on her website, but I haven't been there in a while.

I don't think Johnny Marr would have been able to develop his unique style without playing covers of his favourite songs first. I think intresting covers are good.

Even worse are songs that are covered that should have never been made to begin with.

The most blatent example I can think of is "Total eclipse of the heart"

Another one I can think of is "MacAuthur Park"

And last summer the dixie chick had that awful version of fleetwood mac's "go your own way"

ANY Dixie Chicks cover should not have been made. I haven't forgiven them for Landslide. Also, celebrities (and people who were famous once) are notorious for thinking they can sing. Shatner, Nimoy, even Brent Spiner have albums. Got a bunch in my collection from the '50s, '60s, and even '70s. I may be blogging them soon, so look out.

I used to like Jewel, until that yankee did a remake to Sweet Home Alabama for the Resse Witherspoon movie of the same name. No Yankee, except Kid Rock, should be allowed to remake any Lynard Skynyard hit. If anyone even thinks about doing a remake to Freebird, I will slap them silly.

And what about Smashing Pumpkins' cover of that song?

Anyway, 3 songs that should not have been covered, but have:

1.) "Bizzare Love Triangle" by New Order
2.) "Laid" by James
3.) "Head Like a Hole" by Nine Inch Nails

I forgot to mention Shatner's Has Been album in my post in the Guilty Pleasures thread. Some of that stuff is catchy as hell, don't deny it!

I go absolutley bonkers on the inside, whenever I hear a cover of any Beatles song on the radio. I find myself wishing that the songs were just left alone. If it ain't broke, don't fix it.

I heard a terrible cover of Queen's Bohemian Rhapsody yesterday, it was by The Fugees (I think). It was horrible.

I fI were to form a band and do any cover songs, they would probably be some songs by Depeche Mode and The Killers, similar voice. I'd be sure not to ruin any songs. A bit off topic, but I'm thinking out loud.

The Flaming Lips did an awesome cover of it recently. It's possibly even more bombastic than the original!
