I was in college during the disco era. Folks my age were all polarized into the two tribes:disco fans and rock fans. Both groups hated the other. I was in the rock tribe. But..secretely kinda liked some examples of disco..even then. A girl even taught me to do the hustle and a party ...it was fun.

I was in college from 1975-1979 the height of it. From what I remember the hate was mostly a one way street rock fans towards disco music and fans. Everyone that I knew that liked disco liked rock.

Except for one or two songs I hated disco at the time. The music and the whole scene was more mature then I was. Now that I am older and the music is not ubiquitous I like a lot of disco songs.

It was tribal. Rock fans wanted nothing to do with anything related to disco. Seeing Saturday Night Fever was considered being a traitor. I felt that way also. I did not see it until the 90s. While parts of it are misogynistic it is far from the lightweight piece of trash I thought it was. And as mentioned earlier the rock tribe was white males. It was pre political correctness people were quite open about calling it n****r music or fa***t music.

To say not liking disco was all about bigotry is just as wrong as denying bigotry had anything to do with the anti disco backlash.

There was the decline in quality, the silliness from record companies knowing they could put out anything “disco” and it would sell.

The idea of non live music produced by machines was new. People thought music made by synths was “plastic” and that did not mean natural :D .

Besides prejudice, there was another parallel to today. Disco was thought of as elitist. It was symbolized by the doorman at Studio 54 keeping out the rabble only letting in celebrities and those dressed in certain ways. Acts named Evelyn “Champaign” King and “Chic” added to that impression.

Funny you should mention a girl. Discos had the reputation of being where the hottest women went. Guys were jealous that the “effeminate” looking guys were getting the action they were not. I knew a few guys that said they did not like disco music but went to discos because that was where the hot women went, or so they claimed.

Sweetleaf was not yet born during the disco era and thus came to like disco music on its merits without any of the f****d up baby boomer cultural baggage. That is how it should be.

I enjoy disco. I wasn't around during the seventies but it is a fun genre.

Are.there any artists that I should seek out?

Also,

I like disco but I like a lot of various pop type music, thou I tend to listen to rock a lot more the last few years due to politics & world events & such  :( Maybe I should cut back on the rock some & listen to upbeat stuff more :chin: I think one of the downsides about disco for me is that there seems to have been almost no newer stuff since I was a kid. Whenever I hear disco on the radio, in a store, or on a streaming music site it seems to be the same handful of songs that were very overplayed when I was a kid. I don't want to hear It's Raining Men & the same couple Bee Gee songs every half hour :tired: The only newer disco song I can think of is Hot Pants Rain Dance from an ep of Bob's Burgers

over on this side of the world you basically had two sorts
the giant places with :eew: drab music, and the drab crowd (meat markets)

and the smaller, a bit more student- new wavy kinda thing (no beegees)
more elitist one would say (more white music, too)

'no doobie brothers on my radio' (bootsy collins)

I like disco, it is very jolly and you can dance to it, which is nice. I like the idea that in the 1970s, people danced together and socialised, unlike the lonely isolated life we lead today.

Donna Summer, Giorgio Moroder. Some of there work together shows the clear lineage between Disco and EDM/early House. "I Feel Love" is a jam that EDM D.J.s still play at the end of shows and it's from '78.

"Disco Duck" was a novelty song, no more annoying than any typical non-disco novelty song (Like "Rubber Ducky", or "Theyre Coming to Take Me Away Ha! Ha!". But was one of the few novelty songs to hit number one apparently.

And there were lesser known disco novelty songs like "Disco Drac" for Halloween.

Quite a few. The BeeGees, Donna Summer. But for actual dance parties my fav is the Gap Band.

I often start my commute to faraway worksites (that I have to be at by six am) with this song on my mix-cd in my car.

My parents were very old parents and didn't like anything like disco. They liked classical music so I only found out about disco when I was an adult. 8O

I often hear/read some of these artists get referred to as Funk instead of Disco. I guess the terminology can vary by area or certain circles/groups.

Disco grew out of funk, there's definitely overlap between the two styles as a result. Soul also overlaps pretty heavily with early disco. An example might be the Theme from Shaft.
