Some of the popular singers and bands like T.M. Revolution, Nami Tamaki, Attack All Around, etc. would be a good place to start I believe. :)

Just did a quick youtube search of these groups. I don't like any of them... I guess it's too much pop for my tastes. And I don't like all the techno stuff...

Thanks for the help though.

I am extremely particular about the music I listen to... it actually takes a lot of effort to find music I really like. Much I am just sort of indifferent towards.

Not much techno from this music group

I love J-Pop. Some of my favourite groups and singers are:

* B'z
* T.M. Revolution
* Tommy Feburary 6
* Hironobu Kageyama

I have a lot of music from Ayumi Hamasaki, my sister loves her music, but she's not of my favorites.

Also I love the J-Pop original soundtracks of:

* Dragon Ball series (yeah, it has some childlike songs, but it doesn't matter)
* Yu Yu Hakusho
* Air Master
* X-Bomber
* InuYasha
* Ranma 1/2
* DNAngel
* Gundam series (Gunam Z OST rocks!)
* Other series from the 80s (I love 80's J-Pop)

I think I'm just not a fan of Pop in general... even if it's Japanese.

Are there any Japanese Bands squarely in the Progressive Rock genre?

I'm betting that the Japanese interpretation of Prog-Rock is going to be pretty awesome...

Do you like this one? It's not progressive rock at all, but it's one of the songs I listen to over and over without getting tired of it. It's kinda dark yet quirky.

Not bad, not bad... actually I've watched a very small bit of Cowboy Bepop... and the intro/theme song always draws me in. I've watched an episode just because of that music...

Wow! What a peppy video! Makes me wish I weren't clumsy and poor at imitating dance moves, haha.

Here is "Kiseki no Umi" by Maaya Sakamoto. I posted this a long time ago in the Love Songs thread. It is probably one of my top ten songs of all time. I believe it was originally for Record of Lodoss War. I don't know that it qualifies as pop, but it's Japanese. :P

I don't mind j-rock

I also like jap- doo-wop

Think of the platters "the great pretender" and only you
keep the 6/8 time signature replace platters with a japaniese girl singing
youv'e got japanise doo-wop (minus that distinct quartet sound in the back ground)

As a musician and songwriter, I am absolutely in awe of Kanno Yoko. She is the most amazing songwriter and producer, as well as a very talented musician. She is capable of writing J-pop, jazz, rock, blues, classical overtures and amazing ethereal music that defies simple categorization. I have no idea how she is able to switch gears and creat such beautiful music in so many different genres.

I also love Arai Akino. She has the voice of an angel. Her songs run the gamut, as well, since she works a great deal with Kanno-san.

Mai Yamani who sings The Real Folk Blues above really impressed me with her work on the Cowboy Bebop soundtracks.

Not J-pop, but Smack Da Booty is a really cool metal band from Japan.

Good taste. I saw Dir en Grey in concert recently. Also, you might like Malice Mizer, D'espairs Ray, 12012...

Admittedly, a lot of Japanese music is complete [insert expletive here] but that's true of US music as well.
