I like Hafler Trio. Very sad and spooky atmosphere, but nothing too "gothic" or "metal" sounding. I still need to find time to check out your other suggestions.

I guess I like something that has that sound but with some dynamic progressions. I like stuff that's sublime and delicate at times but builds into harsh grating noise at others. It's hard to tell from 30 second samples what the progression will be like.

It’s so hard to find active torrents of obscure music. Usually I buy a CD if I like it, but I won't buy anything until I can hear the whole album. I hate wasting my money on stuff I don't end up liking.

Hmm, they're not instrumental but Straylight Run is amazing.
They have almost the exact right mix of instruments.

Two amazing songs by them are called "Another Word for Desperate" and "Hands in the Sky"

I'm looking for something that sounds like the first part of this.

well the track is called Hu Hviss-A Ship there are three tacks in that video. Apparently the album is called Summer Make Good by Múm

Basically what you want is something very naturalistic (wind, creaking iceberg, slowed down whale calls, etc) with little tempo or beat structure that has an eerie/desolate feel but without imminent doom.

Maybe it would be an idea to try contact Múm through the label and see if they have any ideas. Worth a try.

Do just want this for personal enjoyment or is it part of a project?

That first part is very calming. I can see why you're seeking more of the same. The debut album of cLOUDDEAD has a similar feel at times.

There's a genius oddity in this category (to me, at least: dark-ish strings): Venetian Snares. That guy is awesome.

Personal enjoyment I guess. I have the album by Mum. I really love thier effects but not their vocals so much.

There is a band from around where I live called Lightning Bolt who play noise rock. They've made a few records on Load Records. Matt Bellamy of Muse is a fan of them (despite the fact he said LB were from Boston in an interview when they're from Providence).

I saw them in concert (they play in the audience) and they're instruments (it's a drummer/singer and a bassist) were so loud they peeled the paint off the walls. Normally I don't like loud, loud music but they were fantastic.

Black Dice was actually formed by a former member of LB who was their old vocalist, LB are actually better now.

lol yes Hisham Bharoocha of soft circle.

I like that black dice has incorporated afrobeat and breakbeat into their style recently. Totally different band. Noise rock has parallel with fusion, Indian classical, various ethic musics.

Sorry for being so picky. :?

Picky is ok.

I don't think the below folks have been mentioned; they are not the titanic drone
metal but noisy and overwhelming at times, melodic and quiet at others. I use them
to drown out the annoying noise around me so I can get work done:

Belong: October Language (like lullabies being sung through a jet engine)
Fennesz: Venice (or any of his stuff; melodic abrasive organic glitchy)
Tim Hecker: Harmony in Ultraviolet (or his other cds; a bit more noisy than Fennesz
but less than Belong)

Two bands that sometimes get lumped in with drone metal actually have a somewhat
different sound (and don't seem to easily fit in the metal category) are Nadja and
Angelic Process. Nadja's recent Radiance of Shadows is great - and particularly the
2nd track (i have tasted the fire inside your mouth) - a spectacular 27+ minute opus.

There should be tracks from all these folks on elbo.ws or Hype Machine. eMusic is
a cheap way to get some of this stuff DRM free and cheap.

Steve Roach is my favorite artist of the New Age genre (or trance or dark music, whatever label it is one uses). I also like Byron Metcalf, Brian Lustmord. But my second favorite artist is Michael Stearns. David Helpling is also good, but I can't seem to find any of his CDs in stores. I am right now listening to Steve's latest, and it is awesome. Very much like Structures from Silence, and The Magnificent Void. I am a big fan of dark music, especially the beatless kind. Stuff I can really trance to. It also helps my writing. If I find a track that is perfect for my muse, I will play it over and over and over. If the story is dark, I will choose a dark piece. Sometimes I listen to Deep Forest. If the story is fantasy, I might choose someone like Enya or the soundtrack to Lord of the Rings. But most of my writing is more along the lines of Steve Roach. He helps me paint pictures in my head of my story.

I see my old thread has been resurrected. :)

I actually found something very close to what I had in mind. I really like the stuff off the album Horizons by Northaunt.
