That object suspended by the sleeper's head is a tassel from the the parapet of the four-poster bed. I can get a visceral understanding of what that rather upsetting creature perched on top of the sleeper ... incubus ... alien visitor ... demon rapist.

But what about that spooky grinning horse? He had just his head poking through the curtain. 8O

And indeed did the Godfather screenwriters know of this painting when they wrote that infamous scene? You gotta wonder.

As for truly creepy, I think Giger is hard to beat.
