I think you may mean A natural minor, as that has no sharps in it at all.

B Phrygian is pretty dark and heavy.

That's interesting, moving the m3 from between the 6th and 7th to between the 2nd and 3rd scale degrees... will have some interesting resolution harmonies as a result - will play with that a little more later.

One I like to play with is: D Eb F# G A Bb C# D
Number of halfsteps: 1 3 1 2 1 3 1

Essentially a mode of a modified harmonic minor scale, it has some curious diatonic chords that arise. Also, with D as the root, it is a symmetrical scale as well.

i'm a bit of a ho for diminished 5ths, they sound so gnarly and dark.

slightly off topic, as i can see some accomplished musicians in this thread.

Q. why do emos only write songs in the E minor natural scale?

A. coz otherwise they'd cut themselves on a c sharp...

XD

melodic minor, nice... then they'd impale themselves on the d sharp, and slide down the black side of the note, bloodied back to their final resting place on E, staining the note a perpetual red...

Wow that came out a little disturbing...

I swear I'm not an emo (lol).

btw, I'm a big sucker for perfect intervals.. any perfect interval, they seem so clean and pure and powerful to me..

I do believe that to be the Double Harmonic Minor scale, otherwise known as the Arabic Scale.

It would be an appropriate name, as it is the same scale separation as the upper half of a harmonic minor scale. While it does have a somewhat Middle Eastern flavor, I'm not familiar with that as a proper name for the scale.

for some reason we always called it the egyptian scale...fantastic cultural stereotyping there!

it does sound somewhat middle eastern, i seem to remember it being used rather alot on the oil ocean zone of sonic two...lol x

Shouldn't it be a minor scale with us?

I hate major...I liked minor from the beginning...then found phrygian to be an improvement, that flat 2nd does something for me. Then came the dark madness of locrian, diminished & chromatic stuff.
But I don't have good pitch sense so I can't sound out this scale in my head. And I haven't played guitar in a while and I'm too lazy to bust it out right now...maybe later...
