I don't feel that way about the elves, but then, I was fan of the books long before the movies came out and formed my impressions there. I identified most with Gollum, Grima and Aragorn, and, to a certain extent, with the hobbits.
Gollum because of his lack of self-control (which is very sad) and his addictive behavior, sensitivity to light and touch (it burns! It freezes!) and long solitude.
Grima as an abused outcast who ended up behaving more evilly than he wished to.
Aragorn for his isolation and the fact that his good deeds during that time went unrecognized/were punished. Misleading outward appearance.
The hobbits for their love of comfort, routine, peace, and the simple pleasures in life.

Now that I list them like that it might seem a bit odd that one person would identify with all four, but I did. If it seems immature, well, I read LoTR and the Silm for the first time at age 8.

If anything, I associated the elves with the cool kids. They are the elite, although some are more than others.

I associated/got associated with Aragorn (by a friend who loved the books and she had a bad childhood) she liked to think the "All that is gold" speech applied to me as I spent the time I could wandering aimlessly around the forest back home."

I always liked him for the reasons you do that he does all the great deeds, risks his life to help people and they still mistrust/ ostracize him for being different, and he does it anyway. Plus for the fact he can kick arse just as well as those pointy eared buggers but not had the 1000 years to practice.

Although I'd like to have saw more of Radagast the Brown he just said stuff it all, you guys fight it out, I want to go play with the animals.

Elrond was the one that worried me, in the council he could have gone 'here take Gandalf and 7 elf lords like Glorfindel (Eowen Stole his horse in the film), instead he goes for:

Gandalf - He's already abandoned them twice and couldn't be bothered finding a stamp/postbox to send a letter that important.
Aragorn - Doesn't even have a whole sword and totaly failed to protect Frodo once already.
Sam - Alcoholic gardener who's obsessed with Frodo, cooking and rope. Dahmer anyone?
Merry/Pippin - Juvenile delinquents who constantly steal and smoke leaf.
Legolas - Possibly the weakest elf in Rivendel butdoes use Pantene Pro V shampoo (avoid beach hair while surfing, use a shield)
Gimli - Useful except in deep snow, long grass, battlements, navigating dwarf halls and opening dwarf doors.
Boramir - About as obsessed with Frodo's ring as Gollum, betrayed James Bond naa lets send him anyway.
