I was a bit disappointed by Portishead's third album, Third. It wasn't bad, but it wasn't worth 8 years wait either. The first single, Machine Gun, is outright horrible, whereas other flaws on the album are the result of bizarre design choices, like having two of the songs just cut off, seemingly in mid-song, and having what sounds like a rubber balloon being rubbed as a sample on what is otherwise one of the album's best songs.

The new Queen album was just...horrible. I wasn't sure what to expect, but certainly not this. I downloaded the album, and I've since deleted it off my ipod; I'm actually really glad I didn't waste money on it.

I dunno, I really like that Portishead album. Great to hear a "comeback" album that involves a radical change of direction rather than the usual resting on the laurels.

So am I. It was nice to see them go in a different direction. And besides, trip-hop died in early 1999, if they made a record that sounded like the first two (both classics, btw), it would've sounded a little dated. Also "The Rip" is a really, really good song.

I never said I disliked the change of direction. I disliked how they deliberately set out to make their music overly abrasive, to the point where I literally felt physical discomfort listening to it on occasion ie that horrible rubber balloon rubbing sound. It's like they said, 'hey this is a great song but it could sure use some more fingernails scratching on chalkboards'.

I really, really didn't like the new Portishead. I totally admit to loving their trip-hop days and trip-hop and 90s music in general. While it may have been a bad idea for the band to stick to old styles, I would have liked the album more for it personally.

I guess we hear different things. I think Metallica's new album is their best since The Black Album. Different strokes for different folks, I guess.

I've never enjoyed a Metallica album more than I have Death Magnetic. One of my favorite albums, period.

Now, I very much enjoy Slipknot's new album, All Hope Is Gone, but as with many new releases by artists, it's f*****g stupid when they said back a few months ago that it was going to be their heaviest yet.

Suicide Season by Bring Me The Horizon.

The vocals are even worse than before. Whilst I didn't really mind the inaudible imitation death growls from earlier, now it is just some p**** emo faggotry. Just some whiny shouting.

The only good thing is the music although the s**t vocals detracted from that slightly. They utilised Drop Bb tuning as opposed to Drop B and their guitar tone was similar to Meshuggah's. Other than that, awful.

True dat, cause it's probably their least heavy.

Not that heaviness is entirely about riffs, mind.

Hah, every time a metal band comes out with a new album they say that. "It's gonna be so EXTREEEEEME!" But it rarely is after they make it big. Cradle of Filth and Dimmu Borgir have the same problem. (Not that I dislike all their later stuff, but it's not at all heavy.)

I dunno, I'm trying to like "All Hope Is Gone," but I can't help but feel like...is that IT? I really love "Vol. 3: The Subliminal Verses," but even that album felt like a predecessor to something even better, and "All Hope Is Gone" just doesn't cut it. I can't even think of ONE song that I really like on it. Plenty of okay songs but they mostly feel like filler b-sides for "Vol. 3." There doesn't feel like there's any creativity there, or power...it's just processed...to me it feels like a generic metal album rather than a SlipKnot album.

And I think that's great, honestly, though I understand how a song like "Machine Gun" would alienate fans of Dummy.
