Perhaps I'm too far along on tha autistic spectrum but I could never figure out why the evil characters wanted to do such nasty things. What was the point? What did they have to gain? But good and evil amongst humans always puzzled me. I can understand the problems between intelligent and stupid but good and evil? I don't get it.

This puzzles me about every movie where the villain's motivations are not made clear. I guess it's supposed to be a search for unadulterated power that turned them evil. Also, you have to remember that, at the time and place in which the book was written, there was a very dualistic worldview, I believe it was just assumed to be normal that for every good there is an equal evil.

I first read the book at the age of 12..I got so totally immersed in it that I was depressed when I finished it! Wasn´t sure what to start up next, I had to have a waiting time before I started another book, if that makes sense. I love the movie too...although there are a few "Hollywoodisms" in there, I forgive them because there are so many other great aspects about the movie. The pictures, characters and music are great. It´s one of those movies that I´ve watched over, and over, and over again...

I hate the film. Can't bear to watch it; ( have watched it once in its entirety; never again !) , it massacres, deforms, discards, alters too much of the essential structure and meaning of the book for me.

I think that LOTR may be the "Gospel" of the Twentieth Century! :D

Great spiritual treasures carried within it like in parable. Seriously. 8)

i totally agree. the books were amazing. i remember the first time i read them. my dad had left The Hobbit out by accident & i picked it up. methinks i was 11 when i read that one. that summer i took the Fellowship to a 2-week camp. i was soooooo mad at the end of the 1st week when i realized that the last 8 or 9 chapters had so little ink that i couldn't even read them!! ! needless to say the 1st day i was home i bought a new set of the trilogy.
i read the Silmarillion and the Lays of Beriland last year. didn't care for the Silmarillion but i adore some of the Lays

I love everything about The Lord of the Rings. Some people would say I'm not a true fan because I haven't read the books, but the only reason I haven't read them is that I have a lot of trouble with reading and I only recently got the audiobooks - they are next in line once I'm through my current series. I love the movies though, and I have read Fellowship and half of Two Towers and just everything about LOTR is incredible, I can't get enough.

I also found patterns online today for crocheted LOTR characters and I'm definitely going to give them a try. They are quite amazing!

haha that is true, I forgot about that. The fact that I named my cat after a character from LOTR kind of shows my love for it.

Indeed! I have 3 cats named for Tolkein characters--one from LotR and two from the Silmarillion. Please skritch Samwise for me.
