All right, I'm defining Alternative Rock to be anything from the '90s on, which is definitely rock'n'roll, but is usually experimental, catchy and loud. Typically an Alt Rock song will have some weird hook to it that you hate the first time you hear it but a few listens later you are addicted

My 10 fave alt rock bands

A Perfect Circle
Arcade Fire
Incubus
Killers
Pixies
QUEENS OF THE STONE AGE (and their side projects and their antecedents and their solo albums)
Radiohead
SMASHING PUMPKINS (and their side projects and solo albums, etc etc)
System of a Down
U2

EDIT: My list might be very different depending on the way you define alt rock... I see some of the bands people mention which to me are what I'd call 'garage rock'... but this is the way im defining it

Franz Ferdinand I'd say were an independant group with a New Wave/Post-Punk sound that is borrowed from groups such as Gang Of Four, Talking Heads and perhaps even early Cure records. Any way my girlfriend is seeing them tonight...

That term is so absurdly vague. :!: 8O
I could almost so that everything I listen to is Alt Rock. :!: 8O

I guess that means that this will be a very long thread then!! !! :P ((And pretty much everything I listen to save for the stuff I adopted from Thagomizer is Alt Rock too, hence why I made the thread- between this and TheViking's thread my entire ipod is covered))

I actually put a list of every musical album I have (save for a mix of Now CDs, or the NowCd's themselves) up in my LJ. It's a pretty Aspie list as far as obvious artist and genre perseverations.

I don't know if they're quite "alternative Rock" but anyone interested in creative, counter-mainstream (how i define "alt rock") music should look up Porcupine Tree, they're f'n' brilliant :)
