The best start can be had with these devices?
The Roland d50, xp80 or Yamaha an1x, a midi hook up from Mark of the unicorn and multi track recording software, And a Korg DS10 for those not at home times. (FL feels amateur and limited)

I've been playing around with my Korg DS-10, and I want to really stress how great this piece of software is. You can make a lot of great music on it, it's really cheap, extremely portable and easy to use.

If you need MIDI or audio hardware, Mark Of The Unicorn (
http://www.motu.com) makes some great stuff.

motu controller, get cubase SL if you're thinking of going the hardware route i'd recommend starting on some digital polyphonic synths as they are somewhat cheap to come by....i'm talking yamaha an1x/sy77 roland d50/xp80 korg microkorg/ms2000...
i play an an1x and an alesis fusion in my band, it allows me to use up to 40gigs of samples live aswell as VA modelling and FM synthesis, a very cool setup for under £1000 x
This is a good thread.
