Grunge is awesome, as is "post-grunge"...never knew what that meant, modern hard rock with grunge vocals maybe.

Let me rephrase that actually, some grunge is awesome. Most grunge is like prog, weird drugged out nonsense. The good bands though are awesome, like the first 4 albums by pearl Jam, ALice in Chains (though some lyrics were really drugged out with them), old Bush and Gardenian.

I don't know, I haven't listened to a ton of either, though I've listened to more grunge, and the two styles are too different to really compare.

Agreed. I don't consider shoegaze a genre, but they do use interesting distortions. grunge does as well.

I like both equally. For shoegaze some favourites are MBV’s two full lengths, Ride “Nowhere” and Lush “Spooky”. I also like the post-bm/shoegaze stuff like Amesoeurs, Alcest and Les Discrets, need to dig into that kind of stuff a little more though.
Favourite grunge albums are Smashing Pumpkins’ “Siamese Dream” (definitely some shoegaze influences there), Stone Temple Pilot’s “Core”, the first 3 Pearl Jam and basically everything by AIC.
Melvins are good too for a band who influenced the genre.

I bought like 4 Sonic Youth albums a while ago for dirt cheap but can’t get into any of them really.

I think post grunge is modern hard rock with grungy vocals...I hear Seether and Puddle of Mudd get thegenre name a lot. I just call them hard rock though.

It's like a Pop version of grunge, so basically it's this specific modern form of Hard Rock/Alternate Metal. Unlike traditional Hard Rock it doesn't really have guitar solos.

In a way I'm glad, some guitar solos feel forced rather than passionate in modern hard rock.

I vote for shoegaze.

Not really a fan of grunge but I saw Mudhoney in London in 1990. God I'm so old.

Out of those I have to go with shoeglaze(don't really get the name), but music I've heard of that genre sounds simular to oldschool psychedelic rock in a lot of ways which I like so of course I will like newer music that sounds similar to it. Never been much into grundge, it does not bother me hearing it but I typically don't seek it out to listen to it.

Shoegaze. I used to listen to a lot of the Sonic Youth, Hüsker Dü, Dinosaur Jr.-type stuff (basically half the catalog of SST Records), but over time I've drifted more towards British stuff from that era. I've also had some interest in bands of the last few years that have taken elements of the shoegaze "sound" and combined it with other genres (electronic, metal, etc.). M83, Blut Aus Nord, and Depreciation Guild come to mind.

I thought this link might be of interest to some people who have posted on this thread. It's footage of Bob Mould (Hüsker Dü, Sugar) and Lou Barlow (Dinosaur Jr., Sebadoh) on the "alternative rock" show "120 Minutes" on MTV in 1994. Bob is guest hosting the show, and he and Lou both play acoustic versions of songs of theirs. I think the highlight is Lou's song, which starts at 2:31:

Also, anyone read Bob Mould's autobiography, "See a Little Light"? I read it last summer. I don't really listen to a ton of his stuff anymore (I listen to a little here and there), but I thought the book was really interesting.

I would go to grunge, because I was born in the Mid 1990s, and I am a fan of Nirvana. I find this genre is all about teenage rebellion. I became influenced few weeks ago. I wear grunge outfit, I practiced singing Cobain's voice, I practiced with my diaphragm, but I tried to singing without coughing. After I screamed, my throat is Scratchy, then I got a lump in my throat due to straining my vocal from screaming. I'm not hoarse, I just have to rest my singing voice. I would get a vocal coach to help to breath correctly, and I would sing. My hair is greasy, if I wasn't in school, but In school, I have to. I rebelled against my parents, and I won 75% of it.

When my lump goes away, I would begin to scream again, but I need other friends to help me.

I sang few verses of Silver (Nirvana)
