haven't checked this thread for a while - serissa, your posts on another thread here made me check - this is getting to be some weird Mobius Strip thing! 
thank you all for your comments - they're really encouraging. and loads better (i.e. meaningful) than some of the drivel i got when i presented it in a seminar for my M.A. !
